Detroit Trutrac install

After reading Mr Kid's trials and tribulations with his rear end (his car's rear end that is), I've decide I'd like to put in one of those Trutrac things. I see that they make 26 and 28 spline models. I have an 84 with the standard 3.73 posi rear and I presume it has 26 spline axles. I'm guessing that it would be wise to change everything over to 28. Do I just buy the Trutrac and the axles, is that all I need? What about C-clip eliminators, how do they fit into the picture?

I do a bit of racing and I have a 400 Dart SLP block going in soon.

Cheers

Yes, replace the differential and axles. That's all you have to do. If you are going to put a racing engine in it then I recommend forgetting about the 7.5 rear end all together and get a 9 inch or 12 bolt. You are just going to waste money on the 7.5 and then have to upgrade anyway.

Re: Detroit Trutrac install

I'm in the process of doing that... Summit had the Factory Ten 28 spline axles kit (with bearings and seals) for around $200... I also bought the truetrac... LPW cover and brace kit..

I would ask, what kind of racing? Drag / Slicks? Traction breaks the 10 bolts faster than a car with street tire... TurboTPI (?) has 570hp on stock 10 bolt with just a aluminum cover).... I know a guy with a T5 with 400+ hp, again, street tires, though...

Thanks, yes I'm aware of the limitations of the 10 bolt, 12 bolts are impossible to find here and since thirdgens are not common either there aren't many 9" made to fit. It's mainly a street car, I do a bit of drag racing but I don't do really hard launches. I think the 10 bolt will outlive me. I will look for a 9" though. The cover and brace kit sound like a good idea.

What about C-clip eliminators, what are they and are they needed?

I don't know if there are any c clip eliminators for the 7.5 rear end. They hold the axles in if they break, but many of them are not for street use. They sometimes leak oil and most are not designed to handle side loads from cornering.
