700r4 Identification Problems
I have pulled a 700R4 from my 1987 parts car. There was NO lock up*wiring attached to the transmission.
The stamping on the pump states it is a 10 vein 1987 pump.
The stamping on the side of the case states it is a 1987 transmission.
There is an auxillary valve body inside.
All the workings of the TCC circuit were inside.
It has a 27 spline input shaft?!?!?!
I have searched high and low for answers to this. i was told that 82-84*were small diameter 27 spline, and 84 and up were all 30 spline.I also found a forum that stated that 82-84 had small diameter 27*spline inputs, 84-early 87 had large diameter 27 spline shafts (will*also interchange with th350c converter), and late 87 and up had large*diameter 30 spline shafts. i did not credit this, as it was the only*posting i found with this information.I most certainly do NOT have a 30 spline input shaft.* (multiple people*have counted the splines to eliminate stupidity)The reason for my concern is that I am looking to buy a stall converter*for this transmission, WITHOUT lockup, but find that the only 27 spline*NON lockup converters are for the small diameter 27 spline shaft of the*82-84 transmissions. Can anyone shed some light on this?

No wiring to the trans or no provision on the trans for the harness connector ?
FWIW
when I had my race trans converted to non -lockup all the TCC stuff was removed from the trans and internal mods done

Re: 700r4 Identification Problems
The 27 spline input shaft (the one that turns) will measure .890" +/- .005" in diameter. The 30 spline input shaft (the one that turns) will measure .990" +/- .005" in diameter. Use a micrometer or calipers to measure the input shaft diameter. The 1982 through the first half of 1984 came with the 27 spline. Starting in late 1984 all 700R4's were 30 spline. If yours is a 27 spline, then someone changed it. To use a non-lockup torque converter, you will need the TransGo non-lockup valve kit and follow the instruction. It is very easy to install. Make sure which input shaft spline count you have when ordering the torque converter. All 2004R's were 27 spline, so torque converter choices should not be a problem.

No wiring on the vehicle side. The provision is on the trans, but nothibg was plugged into it from the outside.

Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: 700r4 Identification Problems
Well, the car came with the wiring, you can be SURE of that; but who knows what might have happened to it over all these years, now that the car is an antique.
There should be a license test that people have to pass before they are allowed to buy dykes: they should have to prove that they understand electricity to at least some basic level before being empowered to hack and destroy.

Re: 700r4 Identification Problems
my sister's 89 RS also had no wiring hooked up to the trans... just throwing that out there.
so basically what your saying is, if i buy the appropriate spline non lockup converter and slap it in, it wont work without this transgo kit? why not? just curious
what is the part number of this kit? i cannot seem to locate it.
thanks for the help guys.
