4th Gen rear end swap

I have a 91 camaro RS. I'm thinking about buying a 3.42 posi from a 1999 camaro. What are some problems I can face? Will it just bolt in?

It will bolt In. Its about 3.5" to 4" wider overall. You need different parking brake cable and may have to adapt the brake line.

Re: 4th Gen rear end swap

you can put replacement axles in it for that rear but the housing itself is wider.

Changing axles will not make it narrower.

Re: 4th Gen rear end swap

Pretty sure you would have to cut down the axle tubes and then get shorter axle shafts. Not the easiest job out there and will require a good amount of skill and/or money if your not setup to do it yourself.

Re: 4th Gen rear end swap

Narrowing the rear end is the only way to make a 4th gen rear end the same width as a 3rd gen rear end. This requires cutting, welding using a housing fixture and another set of axles.

You can install the 4th gen differential and gears in the 3rd gen rear end housing if you also use a set of '90 to '92 axles. This will require setting the pinion depth and backlash so that the gears have the correct contact pattern. It's not a simple bolt in job. This requires shims and precision measurements.

Re: 4th Gen rear end swap

so ive been looking for a 4th gen rear end forsome time now and i can find them atpretty reasonable prices but what im asking i gues is about a rear end that hawksthirdgen sells. its a 82-02 12 bolt moser bolt in rear end assembly. first does anyone here have an experience with this particular product and i guess second would be when they say bolt in it should be relatively easy to install correctly. so would anyone be able to tell me what i would need other than this to get the job done. thanks for your time

Re: 4th Gen rear end swap

I was a Moser dealer for 15 years. The Moser 12 bolt is a good strong rear end. I never actually installed one in a 3rd gen, so I don't know how well they bolt in. If you order one they will ask you what year your car is and send you one that is the correct width. If you order it from Moser you can get it any width you want to fit different wheels and tires. If you have any questions about Moser products I will be glad to answer them for you, but I'm no longer a dealer.

Re: 4th Gen rear end swap

The drive shaft will at least need a conversion U joint. I use to build Moser 12 bolt rear ends with a 3R yoke so that my customers could use their drive shaft the way it was, but Moser doesn't do that. You will also need brakes that work with a 4 bolt backing plate pattern. I've heard that the housing hits the bottom of the floor on some cars that have been lowered.
