2-3 gear issue, looking for the 700r4 gurus.

All the info to the left is updated and correct. I have been reading, and reading, and reading more about how the 700r4 works and what the individual components do.

My issue is that sometimes at WOT, well most of the time anyway, the 2-3rd gear won't happen unless I lift off the throttle for a couple seconds. Part throttle it shifts fine. No slipping in any gear that I can tell. Trans runs just about perfect other than that one issue.

From what I have read, is my assumption correct that either the separator plate where the 2-3 accumulator spring sits is worn, or that the 2-3 accumulator spring is broken? I think its the 2-3 accumulator but I may be incorrect because of the amount of information I have absorbed reading about the 700r4.

Other info;
TV cable is set properly, fluid is good, filter and fluid change within the last 15k miles, trans is all original except for the TV plunger mod for WOT 3-4 shift and new TV spring. Though the above issue often occurred even before the TV plunger mod.

I don't have a trans pressure gauge, or trans temp sensor but I plan on picking both up in the future. Once funds start coming in again I do plan on doing a rebuild myself after seeing what is involved in rebuilding the 700; I feel comfortable doing so myself after watching numerous videos, and picking up a service manual.

Just looking to see if my assumptions are correct on the 2-3 issue present. Don't be afraid to use technical jargon, I can understand 98% of it.

Thanks to the members and continued help that this forum provides. Joining when I bought the car was the best decision I have made with this vehicle, and the turbo was number 2, lol.

I had the exact same issue. Car would not shift unless I lifted and then got back into it. My issue was a worn out/sticky governor. Changed out the entire assembly and it worked properly.

Was your trans doing anything else worth noting?

Nope. Just would not shift from 2-3 at WOT. It would hit the limiter before it ever shifted...
Its very easy to check. The governor is located at the back of the trans on the driver side. You will see what looks like a large round cap (about 3" diameter) that pops off. Once off just pull the governor out by twisting it as you pull(has a worm gear on it). Make sure everything works/looks proper and put it back. Mine had two issues. First the valve within the body of the governor was sticking and second the worm gear is held on the body with a pin. My pin was loose and there was play.
Make sure you put the governor in all the way and the cover seats against the trans case all the way. Do not hit the centre of the cap as it will put pressure on the governor. I put some silicon on mine to seal it. You may have to lower the rear of the trans an inch or two to clear everything.

Yea I noticed that the governor was one of the easier things to get to in the trans thank god lol. How much fluid comes out, just a few drips or will I need a container? When you say the pin was loose, was it the gear that was loose being its not metal or was it the pin itself?

Re: 2-3 gear issue, looking for the 700r4 gurus.

If I remember correctly, hardly anything came out. I would have a pan handy, but dont think its needed.
The gear is plastic and the governor body/valve is metal. There is a metal pin that holds the gear onto the governor. My gear had worn at that pin and there was play. The pin is (cant remember the name of it) hollow and is held in place by driving something down the middle to expand it. Same type of pin used to hold the cam gear on a distributor. As I said, I just replaced the entire assembly from another trans that I had.

I think its called a roll pin or dowel pin or something like that. Thanks for the help.

If anyone else has anything to add feel free to post. Might be a little while till I can replace it but I can pull it out and take a look at least.

This is rare that the governor will cause this problem, if it has then this is an easy fix. The 3-4 clutches not coming on are most likely the cause of this happening at WOT. If the 3-4 clutches are still in decent shape, you can most likely solve this by adding the Corvette servo and then adding the .500" main boost valve, .296 intermediate/reverse boost valve, and lastly enlarging the 2-3 shift feed hole on the separator plate. Start with the Corvette servo which acts as the 3rd gear accumulator, and add the boost valves at the same time. This can be done from the bottom of the vehicle fairly easy. This will give the 3-4 clutches a lot more holding power. This will solve the problem most of the time as long as the 3-4 clutches are still decent and you have not added a lot of horsepower.

Hey Dana, was waiting for you to poke your head in here. If it was the 3-4 clutch, would that also mean the same problem would be present in the 3-4 shift as well? Cause the WOT 3-4 shift is flawless. Its just the 2-3 shift that I have to lift off for, but sometimes it will shift on its own, just not very often.

I dont think the power level will be a problem, its a V6 with a T3 diesel turbo daily driver.

You want to make sure that the TV cable is "tight" at WOT, and then make sure you are getting WOT from the inside having someone sitting in the drivers seat and push down the throttle slowly and look at the throttle blade to make sure that it is going to "full throttle".

Yup. I have read how important it is to set the TV cable properly, once It was set awhile back I locked it in place with a small screw so I know the TV cable is good.
