Bought the 87, don't know the history of it, but seems like it sat for a nice bit, seeing as it had no coolant.. how drove it 30 miles home without damaging the heads or block is beyond me.

Anyway, my tranny is acting odd. Reverse sometimes works full strength, sometimes I have to really goose it and then it'll catch, sometimes Nada. Forward all works fine, though I think the torque converter and lockup is retarded.
doesn't matter if its cold, warm, driving for hours or just fired up for the first time. No amount of wiggling the shifter works, it is indeed in reverse. Fluid is full, not burned and nasty but could probably use a flush. Cable is adjusted fine..
Either its not original or the VSS is screwy.
Its 8mph slow, has the factory rear
Any tips?

Worse case, I have another 700r that works (that I dropped straight on the tail shaft)

The Bellville diaphragm steel plate in the reverse input drum is known to wear the drum badly and will sometimes catch on the splines due to the wear here, and this will cause a "no reverse". The "fix" is to take out the drum and replace the Bellville diaphragm steel plate with a waved steel and the other clutches will need to be changed also. This will fix the problem. Depending on how bad the wear is on the splines in the drum it too will need to be replaced when fixing this. DO NOT flush it. If the fluid is good, leave it alone.

Well, dang. Was hoping to not have to drop it, but figured that was what had to happen. Forward gears are janky too, along with an incorrect or broken VSS, so looks like a new tranny just got thrown into the build.
