Torque Converter differences T400-T700-4L60E

Hi guys,

Quick question about torque converters:

What are the physical differences between the 3?

Are any interchangeable?

1984-1/2 V8 700-R4 was 30 spline.
These are compatible with the 30 spline 700-R4 through the 4L60-E before they went to PWM TCC application.
Not all 700-R4 applications were 30 spline. Early 27 spline 700-R4s (until 84.5 for V8 and later for some others) interchange with 200-4R / 200-C.

TH350 and TH400 interchange (except TH350-C.)

Ok,
How about 4L60E converters?
I just read in 1998 they changed them to a 300mm torque converter...
Will these still work in a pre98 4L60E?

Re: Torque Converter differences T400-T700-4L60E

Well this is just F*%^ing annoying.

I have a 6HHD 4l60E (1996 one piece casing)transmission, that I can't bolt onto my 400SBC.

The old T700r4 converter will slip on and bolt up, but then I can't turn the crank to put the 3 bolts in, but they line up and can attach to the flex plate, but when installed it's locked in place. I've checked and the converter has click in place 3 times correctly.

The converter that came with the transmission won't bolt to the flexplate, the bolt holes are out by about 5mm on each (they need to be futher towards the outer edge)

And I also have a torque converter from a 2001 ls1 4l60e.

The t700 one has a slightly shorter snout to go into the transmission, but is also slightly shorter in height overall.

The motor is a 400 with 2pc rear main seal, and a 168 external balanced flywheel for sbc.

From what I can gather the later model torque converters use a slightly different bolt pattern on the flex plate, so it won't bolt up.

The motor is already completely assembled, and I don't want to get another flex plate and rebalance the whole thing again.

Is there any way to drill out the flex plate to accept the bolt pattern of the TC?
Any other ideas?

The TH400 torque converter mounting bolts are in a slightly different position than the TH350 converter. Most aftermarket flexplates either have a slotted hole or have dual mounting holes so either converter can line up.

Re: Torque Converter differences T400-T700-4L60E

Ok, but how does that relate to the t700/4l60e?

I checked my 153 tooth old flexplate from my 350, and the smaller diameter bolt holes match the new plates holes.

I tried last night, my flexplate has both bolt patterns, and neither fits, slightly too small or large.

At the moment I'm contemplating just using the old converter and hope it doesn't burn out without the teflon/slip material.

Re: Torque Converter differences T400-T700-4L60E

Well here's some enlightening information.

The old T700r4 fit on ok but when i tried to bolt it in, the transmission didn't quite flush up.
Tried and tried to get the converter to drop into place but wouldn't go in far enough.

I'd read that people had forced theirs on and broken part of the pump, so figured I'd open up the transmission to see what was going on,.... and the boltd holding the pump in place came undone with my fingers. Pretty sure I didn't wake up this morning with super-powers, so another ebay lowlife scum sold me a dodgy transmission and said it was reco'd.
When i turn the converter in place, it gets to a point where it feels like there's resistance and then a sort of clunk and will continue along, and given the images i've seen I'd say its broken.

This project is truly giving me the *****, I'm about to pack it in and buy a ****in scooter.
