Location of torque converter switch
Location of torque converter switch
I have a 1991 z28 Camaro automatic, the torque converter switch is bad on my car and I need to change it. However I don't know where it is, I know it is on/ in the transmission but is it on the outside or the inside of the transmission

Re: Location of torque converter switch
I think you are talking about the solenoid that locks up the converter. It is in your tran. Gotta take pan off. I believe there is a way to check it tho. I cant remember what wire but if you put 12v to it and listen carefully, you will hear it click in the tran. Its one of the 4 that are in the plug on the side of the tran, Otherwise there is a brake switch by the peddles and maybe a vacuum switch under the hood by the carb. There is a good video at monstertran that shows how to check the solenoid. good luck.

Re: Location of torque converter switch
Not much to update; none of the parts in a 91 car has moved since June.
What would you like to know about? Maybe a more direct question would get a more direct answer.

Just wondering if he got the LockUp solenoid Changed and wanted to know if you can check the Solenoid without pulling the pan. I know you have to Pull it to replace. But can you test it from the plug on the side of the trans?.
Just wondering if he has his TC locking up yet. I'm having the same issue, My TC isn't Going into LockUp

Re: Location of torque converter switch
Yes it can be tested externally, somewhat:
You can measure its resistance and make sure it's at least still electrically in existence. (no broken wires etc.) Can't recall its exact resistance but I'd expect a couple hundred ohms. To really "test" it, the car would need to be driving. You'd need a harness from a junked car or something, and a switch to apply 12V to it at an appropriate time. Unfortunately if the clutch itself is bad, or there's a hydraulic problem of some kind, that won't distinguish between the solenoid and any other cause of the fault however.

If there is +12 volts on ALDL pin F, using a piece of wire ground the pin. While doing this listen carefully for a 'click' from the transmission. That is the solenoid being activated.
Note that if you do replace the solenoid be sure to wire it correctly. The polarity matters. The resistance of the coil is about 24 ohms.

That switch with the vacuum on it. What's the name of that part to look up online. I need a new one. Mine broke off at the threaded neck.
