9 bolt question

I just broke down a spare 9 bolt rear that I was going to have powder coated and the outer axle races were easy to take out. I was able to basically just pry them out on both sides. I couldn't feel a lip where it would have worn out where they sit in the housing. Is this normal for this rear? The pinion races are in there tight. Thanks in advance.

Yes, that's normal for the axle bearings.

Ok cause I was worried. I've never had races come out that easy unless there's an issue with the bore they sit in. I didn't want to waste money getting it powder coated and it was usless. Any reason why they are loose and all the others are tight?

I am rebuilding my 9 bolt now, this should be all the proper part numbers. I got it from the Tinken catalog. I buy all my stuff through RockAuto.com, I just bought all this stuff, should have it Wednesday.

Pinion seal Timken 7457N
Pinion bearing, outer Timken M86649
Pinion race, outer Timken M86610
Pinion bearing, inner Timken HM89446
Pinion race, inner Timken HM89410
Axle Seal RH Timken 710179
Axle Seal LH Timken 224255
Axle bearings Timken SET9

My axle bearing races were a bit tight and I had to cut them out, I hope I didn't totally screw the housing, I couldn't figure out any other way to get them out. I gouged the inside of the tubes a little

You didn't happen to get the bearings by the center section did you?

Re: 9 bolt question

Hold off on the axle seals, it looks like one or both may be wrong. The axle bearings look correct though. I should know by the weekend whether the rest of the bearings are correct

Re: 9 bolt question

OK, I looked at the seals, the one seal 224255 will probably not work since it actually looks like a pinion seal for a different application. 710179 would probably work, but the profile of the seal is not like the stock ones and it is not a directional seal like stock, so you could use two of these most likely. I do have some SKF seals that ARE correct, I don't know which is which right now (my Helm manual is in the garage) but the part numbers are 16542 and 16491. One is black in color and the other gold, and the Helm manual says which is which. You can get them on Rockauto still, there are a few in stock.

I will start working on the rest of the rear tomorrow. I assembled my carrier this evening. Tomorrow I will press my carrier bearings and try to do the pinion and just double check the gear pattern even though I am not changing gear sets

While these bearings are going to work, this set comes with a different race that is not as thick as the original race, so you'll have either order the races, or a carrier shim set. I am just going to order a new shim set because I plan on changing the carrier and gears in the future
