Pinion Failure and rebuild questions

The pinion gear failed on my stock 1984 disk rear.
I am planning on rebuilding it with a yukon duragrip, gears and master rebuild kit. I already have the TA performance cover even though it has a nice gouge in the inside now. I was not sure if I need thick gear but I am guessing not because the yukon duagrip says 3.23 and up. I am also considering going down to 3.42 so I don't have to max the engine in second to get over 60.

I was thinking about these parts, can anyone confirm they are the correct parts?

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: Pinion Failure and rebuild questions

Should do it.

You are correct, since that is a 3 series carrier, you need std gears, not the "special" thick ones for putting a 3 series ratio on a 2 series carrier.

it has a nice gouge in the inside now
Battle scars.

Re: Pinion Failure and rebuild questions

This would be a good time to upgrade to a set of 28 spline axles. Are your axles worn where the bearings run on them?

Re: Pinion Failure and rebuild questions

I am thinking about getting new axles and going 28 spline.
Are these the correct ones to upgrade? I have rear disks

Right but the bearing surfaces on one of mine is starting to pit and as a28 spline center costs the same as a 26 I may as well go 28 spline axles while I am replacing them

Re: Pinion Failure and rebuild questions

spend the money its yours.. but it will brake over and over...nothing will keep pinon teeth on the pinon in the 7.5.
only upgrade to make that will hold up to beating on it.. is aftermarket

Yes, those look like the correct parts. I don't see where you posted the amount of power that you are making, or what you use the car for. The 7.5 might hold up pretty well for you, or it might just break again. It depends on how you are using it.

I am making about 370hp give or take. Patriot 185cc Vortec Heads, XE274 cam 600cfm carb and 10:1 static.

I plan on using the car on the street never anything wider than a 235 tire 1-4k miles a year and if it gets to the 1/4 mile track once in the next 5 years it will be a miracle.

The last pinion was the factory 3.73 and it finally died after 5 years behind this motor and whining the entire time with a powertrax locker. The death of it coincided with a rear U joint that failed.

Re: Pinion Failure and rebuild questions

It might hold up pretty well as long as you keep street tires on it.

It will never see anything bigger than an all season 235 radial.

Re: Pinion Failure and rebuild questions

I had my friend weld up the cover for me just because I could. There was a gouge and a deep scrape about 1/2 way through the cover on the big side. We hogged it out a little to make sure there were no cracks and then filled then I ground it down.
