26 to 28 spline carrie

I know this has probably been asked many times before now. But I just bought a posi carrier that turned out to be for 28 spline axles instead of 26 spline like I needed. Can I just change out to 28 spline axles or will a few other things need changing ?? I.e. Axle bearings and seals. Or can I change spider gears in the carrier and use my current axles ??? Thanks in advance !!!!

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: 26 to 28 spline carrie

Prolly can't just change the spider gears (side gears actually).

THIMK: where you gonna find THOSE? you'll hafta find another wore-out useless Auburn POS like the one you have, except of course later-model, and take 2 apart and put 1 back together and the other in the trash; except that there's really NO WAY to put one back together after you take it apart (just call Auburn and ask if you don't believe me); why would you do ALL THAT instead of just put the ONE in your car?

Better plan is, get new axles. They're only around $225 a set for MUCH better ones than stock. Then discover that the 28-spline Auburn is ALSO a wore-out worthless Auburn POS Auburn garbage POS, and go get something that actually works instead.

In no case is there ANY advantage, $$$ or otherwise, with re-using a bunch of old wore-out old POS stock 26-spline axles.

Did I mention "old", "wore-out", "POS", enough times? Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the posi carriers that came in these cars stock in 10-bolts, are GARBAGE and nothing but a POS. Altogether NOT the sort of thing you want to plan on to build up a long-term project around as its centerpiece.

Axle bearings and seals are exactly the same. All you need is a set of 28 spline axles for a 3rd gen.

Here is another question that you must answer. The splines are wrong, so what else is wrong? Is it the correct series for the gears that are are running? Is it worn out already?

Do you have bearings and shims to install it? Do you have the tools to measure backlash and do you know how to set it correctly?

To answer your question, yes. I have all the necessary tools to set up the rear end. And as seeing it had 3.23 gears on it before, it should be a 3 series carrier which I need. But if not, that's ok too. For what I've got in it, it's not a big loss and I can turn around and get my money back. Just needed a simple yes or no answer. Thank you for taking the time to answer in a polite manner. Unlike the previous POS as*shole

I just did this on my 84 I used these axles unfortunately they did not fit under the stock 84 rear rotors. I had to have them turned down about 0.3" other than that they worked perfect and came with Koyo bearings.

He's really not trying to hurt your feelings; he's just trying to save you a bunch of heartache and money.

Oh. My feelings aren't hurt in the least. I just don't like the fact that he assumes he knows everything that's going on.

I appreciate the advice. I have drum brakes so if I do end up buying those hopefully I won't have to get them turned down. .300" is a heck of a lot though

Yes I have not measured the newer rotors (90-92) but they must be a fair amount bigger. The bolt pattern is the same and the center hub was the same I just made them match my stock 84 axles.
