How much is a reasonable price from a shop to rebuild a th700r4 transmission? Shop has quoted me $2300-2800 depending on what they find once they open it up. Thanks.
In Kentucky I have been getting quotes around $750. That's with me pulling the trans, them rebuilding it and me reinstalling it. I believe it has a year or 3 warranty.

That's too much, unless it's SEVERELY damaged inside. (stuff like planetaries, needs a new case, etc.)
Should cost around $1400 - 1800 for a bench job in most places. Maybe $200 - 300 more for R&R.
A "rebuild" costs pretty much the same always, because the same parts are always replaced (or should be anyway), and the tear-down, clean-up, inspect, and reassemble is pretty much the same regardless. Doesn't matter how bad burned up the clutches are for example, they're going in the trash anyway. The "depending on what we find" is not a good sign; sounds like no matter what they find, it'll be an excuse to go for the gold.
I worked for AAmco and a few other shops as a kid doing RR work and would watch and talk to the builders. to the point I could do them my self.. tools are needed for this..if your not doing it all the time..
Stock with shift Kit..(88/92) 700r4
anything over $700 (stock) out the door.. is money to the shop..sorry but its true.
converter add $75 to $150
today I take mine in drop them off so they can take apart clean and put back together with new kit (all the small parts you dump) for under $650.. but I do the install.
but then I know the shops and who can do what..
this last 700R4 I'm doing has over $2.500 in just hard parts..i kicked the shop $400 to do the build..as I don't have the super doper dish washer to clean the case..
most shops are in it to make money..and they do..thats how it works
full trans kits run under $200
if you get all new steels and clutches with bushings.
shop time..cleaning and install.. is all profit
make buddys at the dif shops it helps.
I deal in Guns/parts and ammo..Trade is better then cash always...just sayn...
steels clutches seals and bushings..
not stock.. as some parts are billet (pump gear) input shafts and drums... but then what are you going to do with it?

Hi there in Minnesota I paid $700 by a tranny man at his home shop, installed all new seals, clutches CORVETTE SERVO & TORQUE CONVERTER, & ANYTHING THAT IT NEEDED. We removed & installed it. Then I went with a LBP Total electric--External Lockup $39.95 on E-Bay. No vacuum or pressure switches to mess with. Good luck

Seems like double what I paid, and I had them use premium parts.. Shop around.

.........and this was 3 years ago. If they're still in business screwing people over, what are they charging today? $5000???
I had a bare 1990 700R4 built for about $2000 but he messed with my junk '86 700R4 for a day or so before he realized the forward clutch snapring came off leading to damage and the overrun clutches not working. So it evened out to about $1600 total
