Too much sucks

I overfilled my 700r4 on my 85' Caprice and every since it won't catch a gear. No reverse no drive. Only n & p. A guy at O'Riley's told me once I drain the excess fluid I'll be fine, just wanted some confirmation before I go do it in the morning where my baby is stranded

Re: Too much sucks

i doubt draining fluid out is going to make it go in gear.
my first steps would be to make sure the shifter linkage is actually moving on the transmission.
then i would pull one of the transmission lines off at the radiator, (or cooler if you have one), start the car and see if its pumping fluid. it should pump very fast and about spray every where.

Re: Too much sucks

I just had the shifter cable end fall off the trans. I would definitely check that first. If you look under the drivers side you can see if the cable is on the shift linkage. The shifter will move freely if the cable fell off.

Re: Too much sucks

"If" you lost all the gears at once, it will be the rear end has broke or most likely the front pump quit (broke).

Re: Too much sucks

Eeeeeeezy enough to remove some fluid.

Not likely however, that it will fix your problem.

This is a forum for 82-92 F-body cars, not Caprice (B-body) or G-bodies. We'll be nice and help you out ONCE though.

Re: Too much sucks

It is a 3rd Gen Caprice. That counts for a little.

Re: Too much sucks

65 - 69... (my late little bro had a 66 back in the early 80s for awhile)
70 - 72...
73 - 76... (I still have one of those, 74 convertible 454)
77 - 8x... (85 is in this generation)
Then acoupla more...

I guess my 74 is a 3rd gen?

We already helped you out when GM needed a platform to modify to build the third gen.

Sorry about the clutch linkage thing though.
