theres a few things you can do here, obviously its getting bad torque, but pretty good HP, your going to need steeper gears and a higher stall also a bigger cam wouldnt hurt eather, or loose the vic jr, thats a HIGH RPM intake, a Performer RPM or holley street dominator would be a much better choice to get your torque back, i got a real nice bairly used street dominator forsale if your interested.

i see you have a similar setup, what gears are you running?i had an rpm intake on it last year with about the same 60'. i'm not familiar with that intake, isn't it a single plane too?

The street dominator is a high rise dual plane, It is about 1/8 to 1/4 inch taller than the vic Jr, I just took off the Holley, Because the Iron eagles I am using need a felpro 1206, and I haven't tried gasket matching the SD. As for the convertor I am running a b&m torque master 3000, I feel it works very well.

Were are you from in ILL? I am in Marshall.

i looked at your specs and we're about identical, except i have a.020 bore. i have the same cam[.465/.488] on a shelf and am debating about putting it in.i'm running the stock heads that have been reworked, studs, guideplates, pocket ported and gasket matched. i've been hesitant to installit cause i want to be able to drive it in town also and am worried about the idle characteristics. i've got a bad stumble since i installed the victor jr. i put a50cc accel pump but havn't tried it yet.just so expensive trying parts isn't it? i live in pekin, about 6 miles down the river from peoria

Here are a few of my ideas. I would try something like a 3.73 gear and a higher stall converter NOT a B&M torkmaster, I blew one up in a week behind my 406, I now have a TCI street fighter.
If it were my car I might either consider a Comp 292 Magnum cam and 4.11 gears or leaving it as is and getting rid of the victor jr.
The 406 I have is in a '75 nova with ported 993 heads, 9.6:1, 292 cam, 3000 converter/th350, 3.73 gears and 27" tires. It runs 12.6 at 106 with a 1.8 0to 60'. Weird time, my S-10 runs 13 flat at 107.

I have run a TCI breakaway (2400 stall) before. It's faster and yet more streetable with the 3000 converter because it's looser at low rpm's letting it idle better and it doesn't lurch forward as much at minimum throttle.

If that cam is really .447" and 222°, then you're leaving about 50 HP on the table. That's the old GM 151 cam which never runs good in anything. With a 400 in that car and that kind of intake flow (high-end HP), you should be deep in the 12s. The problem is that the 151 cam is a very "lazy" design, it opens and closes the valves very slowly, so they are open very much less than peak lift most of the time; so you're forcing this giant motor to sip from that enormous plenum through a drinking straw because the valves spend most of their life barely cracked open.

You should be having massive traction problems if your engine is runnign right. If you're not, then that is a certain indicator that you're not getting your full 400 CID worth of power. With a 2400 RPM converter, you should be able to smoke the tires all the way through 1st and halfway through second, and they should at least chirp again going into third.

Don't use that Edelbrock cam either, it's also too small for the rest of that induction system. A better match would be the Comp XE274H, with 1.6 rockers. You will need to make sure that your valve springs can handle about .525" of lift with that combo. I had it in my 400 for a while, it ran pretty hard; I don't have times, but with a Performer NOT RPM intake and better heads than you have and Edelbrock TES headers, it did 284 RW HP (325 or so at the crank) and 373 ft-lbs (440 or so at the crank). My motor nosed over at about 4800 RPM though, probably because of the lame intake. You shouldn't have that problem with yours.

You might need some suspension work, if you haven't done some already. I'd recommend SFCs, LCAs, and LCA relocation brackets first of all.

yes it has the old chevy cam in it, the local chevy dealership recommended it.on the street the car does smoke the tires thru 1st, you called that right.i traded some parts for a tci streetfighter, sounds like i need to try it. i've been told a couple of times i have a baby cam, i'm hard headed but i'm getting the picture now. i've got spohn lcr brackets and subframe connectors. the only races i've won have been catching at the end, maybe with these mods that'll change thanks for all the input.
