700r4 governor cover install

Had to take the governor cover off to change the weights. (Shifting late - past rev limiter). Is there an easier way or a trick to getting the cover back on? I had to take tranny mount loose - drop down and then tried every trick I could think of to get the cover on square. I did put the gasket on the cover, then pushed the top in first - Is there a special tool to use? So close to being done with the restoration of the "Smokin' Bird".
Thx byron

I've heard of people using a 2x4 as a lever to push it on while it's still in the car. Not sure if it work for you, but it's about all I have.

I tapped mine into place with a smallish deadblow hammer.

DO NOT hit the middle of the cover as this will decrease the governor clearance and can waste the governor gear in minutes. Tap on the outside ring of the cover only.

Thanks to all for the response. This will be the 4th time I have attempted to "adjust" the governor. Still shifts late - am into the rev limiter. Getting close (I think). Thanks again. Byron

I am using the TCI governor cover. Seems a bit stronger than stock. Comes with a rubber gasket. I definitely was careful not to stove it in when I gently tapped it into place making sure I tapped towards the edges where the curvature of the cover makes it much stronger.

Definitely don't bash it in the center with your 20 oz ball peen....

I went to my local trans parts supplier and got a good used stock governor for $30. Then I had a baseline. My lightly used race trans came with a governor with WAY too high of shift points for my stock engine. From there it was easy to lighten the weights till I raised it just about 500 RPM.

Thanks to all - got it to shift @ 5600 in OD - shifts a little early with part throttle - I am ok with that. Shifts manually when ever you want to. Was a bugger to get the cover on the govenor but I got it - no leaks. Byron
