Re: clutch that will hold up on dragstrip

McCleod makes one that is slightly bigger than the size they sell for 3rd gens / T 5's that fit, I have one and several other members do... I think it's rated to 500hp.... do a search here...

I had a Centerforce DF in my 427 Camaro that I beat on for many years with no problems at all. It's still a very good clutch. Just upgraded to a McLeod dual disc RXT.

With a 3.08 gear and a 275-60-16 tire pretty much any clutch is going to hate you.

That tire is 29 inches tall. Put that together with a 3.08 gear and it's a wonder that you can get the car moving. I'd probably go to a 3.73 or 4.11 with a tire that tall, or go to a tire that is about 24 inches tall.

Re: clutch that will hold up on dragstrip

I broke my first "World class" T5 doing clutch drop burnouts with a 305TBI and street tires. Those transmissions break easy so I don't advise using any kind of drag tire, dot for street use or not. A T5 can live behind a decent engine but your 60ft times will always be poor and your shifts will take much longer. I ran the CenterForce Dual Friction clutch also and I liked it.

Re: clutch that will hold up on dragstrip

I spent the better part of a decade putting 50+ passes a year on Spec clutches on sticky tires with 1.5xx short times.

They performed very well and the ONE time I had a problem with a brand new clutch, they took such good care of me I swore I'd never use another brand.

I picked up a billet twin disc setup from them last year and I love it so far.

At lower power levels I've used the Spec Stage 3 and Stage 3+ and they're great.

Re: clutch that will hold up on dragstrip

Centerforce DF held ok at the strip but didn't like slicks. It would slip if I went hard off the line and I could smell it bad. Easy pedal great daily driver.
Ram Powergrip HD held with slicks but the pedal effort was so high my clutch hydraulics blew out. It may be better now that I have a metal master cyl but it was a bear to deal with in traffic.
Was considering Centerforce DFX but ended up going with....
Mcleod RST. It is a dual disc organic clutch. It holds great at the track. In fact almost too good. There is little, make that no slipping it. It has moderate effort, somewhere between the Centerforce and the Ram. Don't notice it unless sitting for a long time at a drive through. The only negative is it is a solid hub disc. It transmits harmonic vibrations to the transmission at certain load/rpm points. Causes "gear rattle" when lugging in 3rd or 4th at ~2000rpm. Avoidable but something you should know about or you may think something went wrong. It is also expensive at ~$800 but if you are like me and put 4-5 clutches in looking for the right one it's a bargain.
If $$ is tight and you don't mind the effort the Ram is a tough clutch and ~$400. If you have mechanical clutch linkage you don't have to worry about the hydraulic issue.
If you are in between the Centerforce DFX may be a good option at ~600.
