Did i ruin it?

700R4 in a 92 K15 chevy pickup. Brand new tranny rebuild but did the install myself. I did not hook up TV under the assumption that it was solely for kickdown purposes but now im the wiser. has about 1K miles on it since the install and will not upshift as of today. Will it snap out of it with TV hooked up correctly or is it done for..?

Hooked up TV cable and no luck. Gonna require another total rebuild or not quite?? Just wondering if I'm totally at a loss here

Re: Did i ruin it?

What does the fluid look like?-if its still red, could be an easy repair-if it has turned golden yellow,it's burnt and another rebuild will be needed...was tranny slipping before the no upshift condition started? One of the more common causes of no upshift on a 700 is a broken governor gear-it's a little plastic gear fixable from outside the tranny

Re: Did i ruin it?

I pulled the governor plate and checked to see if there was any restriction and fluid was good looking and also good movement when pushing on the weights. I assume the gear is behind those weights??

Felt a bit of hesitation when grabbing second yesterday but not like slipping that I've felt before

Re: Did i ruin it?

Alright a little update. I pulled the governor gear and viola, it's stripped out! So the problem has been identified but i do not have the knowledge to know what the cause of the problem is. Could the TV cause this? Or my other hunch is torque converter lock up issue? This pickup is a carb swap from TBI so no computer anymore which is what tells the converter to lock up when needed..? Is this true? There is a toggle switch wired into the dash that I've never known what for but from other threads I've read it sounds like this could be for the converter lock up which reduces hear build up in the tranny. Any info is greatly appreciated as I am far from a diagnostic guy! Thanks

Re: Did i ruin it?

Not sure I'd let the rebuild guy rebuild another trans. First reason is that he removed the TV safety check ball. This is what allowed the trans to burn up.

If that OEM factory check ball was still in place you would have had late hard shifts (full line pressure). But would not have damaged the trans. And, you would have known that something was wrong (TV disconnected).

As for the governor gear, it was likely worn out and should have been replaced on the rebuild. It is a common wear item.

Edited to add, check the governor cover closely, if it looks like it has been hit near the top center will need to replace it. Even a slightly pushed-in cover puts pressure on the governor which will cause the gear to strip.

RBob.
