transmission problems/questions

So my 700r4 in my 92 RS (305) has been hesitating when shifting to 3rd for a while now, recently i drained about a quart of fluid and replaced it with some thicker hoping to fix the shifting problem, and the next day the trans completely stopped shifting into 3rd at all. So now 1st and 2nd gear is all it will do, and 2 of the 3 mechanics I talked to says it’s one of the sensors on the side of the trans. However I think it’s a much bigger problem though I’d like to hear everyone’s thoughts on it. Also, if it do have to replace trans, should I go with 700r4 or 350 turbo trans ?

Re: transmission problems/questions

Did you try adjusting the shift cable?

If it is busted swap in another 700R4 don't downgrade to a turbo 350

Actually haven’t tried that, can you give me some pointers as to how to check it ? Not the most mechanically inclined person ever

Re: transmission problems/questions

Hey mate, put her up on some stands, and there should be on the drivers side of the trans a cable that links to the side of the transmission, there is an adjuster nut on the rear side of it (this is all from memory) that attaches to a little bracket.

If the tension goes out of whack, you undo the tensioner nuts, put the car in first via the shifter, get under the car and manually click/turn the shifting tab to first (then gently wiggle the shifter tab to make sure you are smack bang in the middle of first)

retension that cable, jump in the car while its still on stands, put it in park and start her up. while holding your foot on the brakes, drop it into first and accellerate gently, then into second, then into third then into D (and assuming you have a functioning TC lockout, it will drop into overdrive after 4th)

If thats all good hit the brakes to stop the wheels, put it into D and see if it goes through all the gears by itself.
