TH200 to Th2004r
TH200 to Th2004r
Hi!
I´m doing a swap in my 82 trans am from the original th200 to the th2004r.
the Problem is the clearance on the top side of the th2004r. is this possible that the th2004r is bigger that the th200?
If i wanna go straight with the driveshaft the th2004r is to big and i have no space between the tranny and the car.
Did anyone has this Problem??
Thanks alot
Martin

Re: TH200 to Th2004r
You should have no problem placing the 200-4R in a third gen. No floor mods were done for them to fit in the 89 Turbo T/A. The mount does sit fairly far back and low. So don't expect the 200-C crossmember to fit it. Also, 82 had two crossmember holes per side. 83-92 has three. Perhaps you've run into that?
You should just need a crossmember that supports the mount at the right place, and has a torque arm relocation bracket.

I have not the Problem with the braket.
My Problem is the floor pan of the car. when i put the tranny in the same hight as the drive shaft it hits the floor pan on the top side of the tranny. maby a 82 Trans Am has another floor pan as the 83-92 Trans Am?
Hope anybody here has done the mode and has the same Problem?
thanks alot

A 200r4 takes a special trans crossmember to make things fit. (I happen to have one for sale)
Re: TH200 to Th2004r
I have the Original 305SBC Engine. What crossmember did you have for sale? Are you shure with the floor pans on early third gen?
thanks Martin

Re: TH200 to Th2004r
Has anyone mentioned the regular 2004R overall is a crap transmission?
I've had 4 TTA's and I've had to rebuild the Transmission on each one at least once. (actually, I think between the 4 car's I've had a total of 8 rebuilds until I found a guy who builds them proper)
The turbo Trans AM and GN transmissions each have a different valve body and clutch packs compared to any other 200R4 and the 2004R out of any other generation GM car will be crappier still. It's not generally regarded as a high-performance transmission.
I do not recommend swapping one in unless you have an overbearing reason.
