Transmission cable

Ok, yet another problem I drove my car today about 30 miles parked it and when I went out to take it home it fired right up I tried to put it in gear its a automatic with the 700R4 transmission is less than 2 years old. It has the center floor console shifter. Anyhow the shifter just slides up and down like its totally disconnected. So I guess I have a broken cable? Either at the shifter or the other end? I dont even know where the other end connects? At the transmission? Or elsewhere? I found the cable is sold at Autozone but is this a tough job or no? Any help appreciated. I had no tools with me so I had to leave the car! 1987 Iroc Z 305 TPI. Thanks!

Re: Transmission cable

Not tough at all.

The cable breaks ALOT in cable-shifted cars generally. Not just these. Not too big of a deal really.

You can probably do it wherever the car is, as long as it's safe. (no drunks will come careening down the road and crash into the car while you're under it...) If you can either get under it long enough to shift it into gear after you start it, with your assistant holding the car still with his/her foot on the brakes; or, if you can pull it to safety; you can probably take care of it.

You'll need to pop the console out. Phillips screwdriver, and 7mm nutdriver for the most part. Pliers, screwdrivers, other basic stuff, to change the cable out, from there. 13mm at the trans if memory serves but don't trust me, bring a whole socket set. Not too much of an ordeal really. You can do this.

Re: Transmission cable

Cables do break, especially the aftermarket ones: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tran...-auto-mod.html

I recommend you get the Shiftworks cable, but if you're in a hurry and can't afford, then buy it when your replacement breaks.

Re: Transmission cable

I got this fixed today. Yeah it was the end of the shift cable down on the transmission. I just tied it up tight with a wire and drove it home.
