700r4 Not shifting

Hello new to this forum I have an 88 camaro 305tbi with a 700r4 drive it home one day no problems went out to start it a few hours later put it in reverse wouldn't move no whining just rev's. I went ahead and took it to the end of the street to see if the other gears would shift ok and it started slipping in 1st and didn't want to shift, checked the fluid level all was good there and red didn't smell burnt any ideas thank you

Re: 700r4 Not shifting

Torque Converter or Transmission front hydraulic pump. Prob a mess if either one went, best to have someone go through it and rebuild. TC can be had for $150, pump about $120. Plus the labor and whatever parts it might need while it's apart.

One thing I have learned, is that transmissions are a different animal..... Make sure you know what you are doing to have someone that does.

Re: 700r4 Not shifting

If you pull the transmission it is easy to see if the pump is wasted.

Drop your pan. If there is metal in it, pull the transmission. Or have someone do it.

Re: 700r4 Not shifting

It is not the torque converter. Torque converters cannot select a gear to not work with. Put a 0-300psi gauge with it, and see what you get. Most likely the transmission will have to come out to see what went away.
