What's a fair price for a used T5?

Interested in doing a auto-T5 swap. What's the going rate for something like that?

Thanks

Re: What's a fair price for a used T5?

Hard to say. I paid $500 for one in good condition, but high miles, along with the pedal assembly about 10 years ago. On one hand they're not overly common, but on the other, they're not really a "high performance" piece, so it's hard to say what people will ask for one. I've seen prices all over the place.

Since the car isn't really "original" once you've done the swap (if that even matters) I'd go with the T56. Better transmission, rebuild and upgrade parts all over the place, and tons of experience on the forums to help. It would likely be a little more money up front, but it's a rock solid transmission.

Found one for $500.00 and comes with the bellhousing, flywheel, new clutch and pressure plate. Sounds fair?

Would you trust on the guy's word that it worked just fine or would you have it gone through and checked out by a transmission shop? Would it be worth it to have it checked? I'm not planning on running it hard. My car is a cruiser, not a racer...

Personally, I'd have someone check it out--I realize that's an extra expense, but I'd rather put it in ONCE, than discover an issue after going to all that trouble.

I've just done that myself--I found a reasonably priced T56 on Craigslist, but had a transmission shop go completely through it...It was worthwhile, but cost me about $900.00. Turned out it was usable, but really needed a few things like synchronizers, that would have given me some trouble not too far in the future. It was worth it to me to know that I'm probably set for years with a fresh set of seals, synchronizers, and a couple of other things that while not completely failed, were definitely on their way out.

3-500 depending on the year gear set and condition.

Nothing wrong with having someone go through it, but remember the labor is what costs during a rebuild, not the parts. Not sure how far down you'd need to take it to give it a worthwhile inspection. ....be curious to see the cost difference. You could probably pay less for one you KNOW needs rebuilding, and then just have it rebuilt.

That being said, I bought the how to video from Hanlon Motorsports and rebuilt mine myself. Not too hard really. Had a few hundred in tools, which of course now I own, and it was still several hundred less than a rebuild at a shop.

You can give it a decent inspection just by popping the tail housing and cover. You will probably need to pop the tail housing anyway to change the gear for the speedo

Re: What's a fair price for a used T5?

I'd say about 500 bucks for the whole set up, trans, bellhousing, pedals, reservoir, etc., not including clutch, pressure plate and whatever you're doing with the flywheel.

I was able to find a CHEAP T5 locally, $50 and it included a shifter for my '83 swap, and sourced all the other parts individually. My T5 came out of an '84 Firebird, Iron Duke and the inside looked great. Very steeply geared though, IIRC, 1st gear was a 3.76 ratio, which when combined with my 2.93 rear gear, and my LU5's 4500 RPM useable rev range, meant you were in 2nd gear by the time you crossed an intersection.

The v6 and i4 t5s are usually much cheaper than v8

Re: What's a fair price for a used T5?

I have a V6 T5 in my ‘88 IROC...that 4.03 1st gear is one of the reasons I wanted to replace the transmission..like a previous poster mentioned, I’m shifting into second gear almost as quickly as I get the car rolling, except on extremely steep hills.

I sold my old T5 set-up with 34k miles on it for around $800 10 years ago.
