GM Service Replacement Transmission Assembly
Just pulled the 700r4 out of my 92 for a rebuild and noticed that the ID number on the side is ground off. Can't Identify what year. It has a sticker that reads GM Powertrain Service Replacement Transmission Assembly. Also has 2 F T on the side were I'd expect to see MD8. I still haven't popped the pan off to see if it's the older/weaker version of the 700r4 or the newer/improved version. Can someone shed some light on what I got. Has 8663549 on the side of the case, Appears to be a dealer replacement but not sure.

I have one of those in one of my cars too but never really inspected it to far. The owner I bought it from confirmed it was replaced at the dealer.

I would expect that it would be the "newer/improved version" with the factory recommended upgrades (provided it's in the original factory rebuilt condition).
Most if not all the major factory changes to the 700R4 visible by just dropping the pan were implemented by late '86 / early '87. Since your car is a '92 MY F-Body, I doubt that a dealer would have an "older/weaker", 6 year old replacement transmission gathering dust on the shelf.
From my old note book....
