What size motor? How much do you want to spend?
Also do you have the tools to tune it after the swap?

I want to spend as little as possible but want it to work perfectly. It's a stock 89 LB9 (TPI).

Use your local resources to pick up everything from a parts car. 88-92 WC T5 from a 305 car, the pedals, switches, and pigtails, 88-89 PROM (will need to !VATS) and when you're all done, keep the TCC wiring from burning on the exhaust.
Stock stuff works and would meet you needs. A 2.66 / 0.50 T56 is not what you will want to drive with a 305 and 3.42 rear. The only offset of T56 cost is fuel savings w a possibly taller 6th, so along your goals, keep it simple as stock.
