Shifter Issue After T56 Swap

Hello all,
So I am wrapping up the T-56 install on my Camaro, and I'm at a bit of a loss. I purchased the Hooker Blackheart trans brace and holy crap the shifter sits way up into the trans tunnel. I don't see how I'm supposed to fit all that shifter under the boot. The MGW shifter isn't that small either. I"m considering making a trim piece out of 1/16 steel and clamping a sheet of rubber across, only with a cutout for the base of the shifter (rectangular mounting area). I'd just like to hear some feedback on if this is usual or not.

Thanks,
Mark

I used a 4th gen Camaro boot with my MGW shifter.

So I'm not sure if this means anything, but you mentioned the transmission brace, and it sitting up high. Is it sitting up higher than it's supposed to? Because an improper driveline angle is FAR bigger of an issue than the shifter. -but for what it's worth, I had to fab up a cover/boot for my TKO swap. Basically just arts and crafts day at the hardware store. Fab something up and make it work! LOL!!!

Did you ever get this figured out? I have a LT1 T56 in my '88 IROC with the Blackheart cross member and the MGW shifter. I have the 4th gen boot which is very tight as mentioned above but the bigger issue is that the shifter tower/base is hitting the console at the recessed area where the e-brake goes. I'm not sure how to fix this so I'm thinking of switching to the Hinson shifter as it seems to provide more clearance.

FWIW -- put a 4th gen console in. You gain a couple of cup holders and there is plenty of room for the shifter, its not 100% bolt in and doesn't look 100% original but very few will notice.

I won't do that. I have a low mileage car with an extremely clean interior. I'm doing exterior mods (e.g. wheels, paint) but I'm not touching the interior aside from changing the shifter plate to the manual style. I just need to figure out this shifter situation

Re: Shifter Issue After T56 Swap

Don't forget the holley crossmember requires a thinner trans mount forget the # but it's in the instructions

Re: Shifter Issue After T56 Swap

I haven't finished my swap yet but this is how the trans sits in relation to the tunnel with the Holley crossmember Gen 1 L98 with LT1 T56 I also using the 4th gen lower boot. It seem to fit fine with the trans a bit above the tunnel. I have a ways to go before I can check the driveshaft angle however.

Best lead I’ve had so far. I double checked the instructions and you’re right. I’m going to swap the mounts and see. Hopefully this works. Thanks!
