tranny database

Hey guys. Im not sure if I overlooked a pre-existing thread for this question so apologies if this is incorrect.
My roomate just got a really sweet blue 1991 rs. Low original miles, great condition, highly optioned and tons of potential for an overall head-turner and performer. It has a 3.1 so we have an unknown sbc350 that we want to swap. I know this has probably been done and asked about a million times but its a first for us so any help is appreciated.
I am looking for a database for the 700r4. I hear there are different versions so I need to know which V8 donors to look for when sourcing the car. My 84 z28 has the "baby" 7r4 I was told but then when the 350 came back in 87 it got an upgrade (different bolt pattern?) I was told so I just need some help from someone who can shortcut me to getting the right tranny/donor car to match the sbc. I guess at the end of 91 they went to the 4l60 and let go of the 700r4?
Fact geniuses welcome!! lol
thx

Re: tranny database

there is no "baby" 700-there are v8/90* v6 versions and 60*v6 (2.8-3.4) version there are early (82-early 84) version, upgraded ~3/84-87 version and further upgraded 88-93 version. The electronic control 4L60E version came out in 1994.1988-93 would be most desirable, but I have had very good results with the 8-84 vintage 700 in my car.One of the 1984 upgrades was input spline was upgraded from 27 spline to 30

Re: tranny database

The 93 trans is one year only, unless you want to rewire the car for a 5 pin TC harness.

Don't do it OP. The odds of successfully completing a V swap on a six cylinder and having a car that doesnt end up rotting in a shelter belt a short time later are astronomical.

For a V8 you should search for the 88-92 V8 tranny.

There is a molded "LINE" on the housing on 88 & up...... an easy way to quickly see if it's pre-88 or not.
