1989 Steering Column help
First i will start with my problem's...
Just got back from a pickyourpart where they had 1 1989 firebird and the only thing missing really was the column!!!!
- Turn signal switch is missing
- puller broken off in pivot pin
- MOST IMPORTANTLY the steering wheel wobbles at the "shaft?". i dont believe its the 4 bolts that need to be tightened because from the videos i watched they all shake from the neck up... mine shakes only at the end. I believe it may be the u-joint? idk

Re: 1989 Steering Column help
First off welcome to the forum, secondly take a bit of time and fill out your profile so people will know more about your car.
Turn signal stalks can be purchased in the aftermarket and after the cruise wire (if equipped) is snaked through it just snaps in.
The piece stuck in the pivot pin can be extracted, I had to do it twice when I rebuilt my column.
The four bolts refer to the tilt wobble, but I believe your issue is related to one of the bearings is missing or really worn out.
As for the column being different, 1989 was the first year for the PASS-KEY ignition lock system, also called VATS (vehicle anti theft system) here in the forum. If the previous owner disabled or bypassed that system, then you could go with an older column. Vats was programmed into the ECU, so if you no longer have the factory computer then youre good to go with an older column too. Only difference in the older columns is there is one for automatics and one for manuals, with the manual column having a lever behind the ignition key that needs to be pressed down to remove the key.
