700r4 acting weird

I have a 89 camaro rs that used to be a v6 but was swapped to a 350 with an auto 700r4. So I finally drove the car for the first time after it’s been sitting about 7 years. I changed all the fluids including the trans fluid. So the car goes into reverse no problem backs up like a normal car, I put it in drive it moved and shifted into 2nd no problem, well then it shifts into third and it felt like neutral. If I give it about half throttle or wot it will grab gear and go just fine. But if I’m not accelerating decently hard it doesn’t move. Is this a torque converter problem possibly?

It does sound like something is sticking, Does it shift into 4th or stop at 3? I assume you changed the filter when you did the fluid. I would also suggest doing a fluid exchange, this will flush fresh fluid through the TC.

What is a fluid exchange? Could this be a problem with the tv cable

Fluid exchange = exchange old fluid for new

Probably not a TV cable problem.

Not a converter problem. Converter does the same things no matter what gear it's in.

More likely, the 3-4 clutches are toast.

I doubt the fluid thing will do anything, especially since you say you've already done it, but you never know... might enable it to drive one more day or something. But once clutches start to slip, it's usually pretty much all over with for them.

Sounds like a valve sticking problem, or something else sticking. Fluid change is a good idea, but I recommend putting in some TransX or Seafoam automatic trans additive first and drive for a while to clean it good. I have been able to completely clear up some funky shifting issues a few times with different transmissions and either of those products. I recommend to avoid any products that claim to contain "seal conditioner".
Since it engages when you rev the throttle it is less likely to be clutches going bad. Those generally slip worse the more throttle you give it. Sounds like something sticking and not clutch packs going out.

Re: 700r4 acting weird

Thanks everybody I’m not willing to accept it’s the clutches yet because it’s the opposite of a slipping clutch but I do believe something is stuck and it would make sense on a car that has been sitting for almost a decade and drove fine prior.
