9” Ford rear diff pump

Hello all,

Do I need to hook up this diff. pump or can I just not install the hard line to the fitting and leave it operational in the pumpkin capping the fitting of course? Do I need to remove it if I’m not running a cooler?

I have searched but could not find anyone installing a diff cooler on a third generation. I’m open to getting something to aide in cooling gears. I’d rather have something I can install and forget about… no fan would be even better.

Thanks in advance

Nothing?

Okay, let’s say you wanted to hook up the pump… any viable option on mounting a cooler? I seen the axle mount option but it just doesn’t impress for a car intended to still being driven..

any suggestions welcomed

I'm not familiar with your set up but it's a general truth that pumps that are running usually don't like to be plugged.

I don't think a cooler could survive shock/vibrations being axle mounted.

And a body mounted cooler is not going to survive a hose tugging on it with axle movement. You would need to strain relieve the cooler fittings by clipping a hose fitting to the car body.

Used a lot of those in dedicated road racing cars. The cooler was mounted to the body with a temp controlled electric fan.

^^^^^^^^ Yes.

I also have done a significant amount of Diff cooling systems.
I normally use an external scavenge Pump though.

Re: 9” Ford rear diff pump

A splash lube regular diff. is going to go pretty far under normal healthy small block power levels. OEM durations, like 150,000 miles.

A pump can be very specifically helpful when a drivetrain assembly has contact surfaces or bearings that aren't effectively splash lubed. Forward-located bearings can miss out during uphill runs, for example. But for the most part, the gear lube is going to get flung upon, and lubricate the gear areas that need it, and I wouldn't sweat running one in a diff, without more info on the need for it.

You think one of those underbody kits with the fans would survive street use?

If you did it correctly I'b bet it could but it would depend on a lot of factors.
