700R4 Pump Screen
700R4 Pump Screen
Just bought my first third gen. It came without an engine or trans, so I am rebuilding a 700 that came out of an 86 Caprice cop car (date code on the trans is 85). My only question is something I have never seen on one before and am wondering if anybody else has ever ran into it. The pump does not have a screen. Where the screen would go has a freeze plug peened in instead. I was going to just remove it and install a screen, but after looking closer the bore itself is significantly smaller than the screen bore would be. I have both ATSG manuals and nowhere do I see any mention of a 700 pump ever coming like this. Do I just leave the freeze plug in that hole, or do I have some oddball pump that should be replaced?

I am assuming that you are referring to the Main Line Pressure Filter Element shown below:

Re: 700R4 Pump Screen
There is absolutely no benefit to omitting that Filter-Element.
Especially if there is a Torque-Converter failure... the Filter-Element captures all the Debris from the Torque-Converter.
I have no idea why someone would omit the Filter-Element and replace it with a Freeze-Plug.
The Bore might be damaged from someone screwing around with the Rear Pump-Half.
I would remove the Freeze-Plug and see what the Bore looks like.
If it looks okay, see if the Filter-Element will seal.

It also appears that the Pump Main Line-Pressure Relief Spring is missing from it's Bore.
Did you just remove it? ... The Retaining Pin is still there.
Has it been modified also?

Re: 700R4 Pump Screen
It must just be a bad picture. It is in there still. Obviously there is no way to know 100% for sure, but based on the history of this transmission (pulled from a wrecked local city cop car in the early 90s) and what I saw inside it when rebuilding, I am fairly confident it has never been touched. Which brings me to my next question then.... I agree I would definitely like to run the filter, but as the last picture shows the bore in the body is significantly smaller than a standard 700/4l60 pump filter. Should I bore out the body to take one?

I just knocked the plug out and measured the bore. It is a perfectly machined .500 hole all the way down, and it appears the filter is .665. Is it possible this was simply mismachined at the factory and someone on the line threw a plug in it and sent it?

No those Filter Elements only came one way... they even fit the 4L60E and the THM200-4R Transmissions.
I would replace the Rear Pump-Half.
Post a few Images of the Stator Support Splines... they are probably pretty worn anyway.

The Images are not clear enough where the Splines are...
But they do look good from what I can make out.
