B4C transmission 92 MXO?

Quick story my parents unknowingly bought me a B4C back in highschool thinking it was just an RS. Many tickets and licences lost provided me with the best teenage memories ever! Transmission finally gave out, rebuilt ,replaced, monster, godfather trans BS! car was never the same. Many disappointments later "life" and VATS car has sat for 15 years. I vaguely remember it had a MXO-21 sticker. Is it a 700r4 or a 4l60e? Does the ECM control shifts or TV cable? Key features of the original trans it would stay locked in the gear you put it "like a manual" and function like an automatic in OD. At cruising kick down would spool up and drop down. It wasn't the most powerful car, but it would hook and fly leaving many cars pitifully turning around and going home. Any info on torque converter would help too. Do chips change shift points? Finally got it running again looking to put some money in to it who do you recommend TCI?- ps sorry as a dumb teenager I peeled of the rpo codes sticker.

RPO code MXO is installation provisions for an automatic transmission.

RPO code MD8 is for the transmission installed in your car. In your case a 4L60 transmission operated by a TV cable. Not a 4L60E operated by computer control.

Somewhere in the early 90's GM changed the naming convention of their transmissions. The 700 R4 got renamed to the 4L60.

The programming burned onto the chip controls the TCC solenoid that engages or disengages the lock up clutch in the torque convertor. The conditions under which this occurs can be reprogramed in the chip. The shift points are controlled mechanically by the valve body and governor. Not controlled by the computer. The shift points can be changed by modifying the valve body and changing the governor.

If you are asking for a recommendation on what torque convertor you should use that depends on how you intend to use the car and what modifications you intend to do to the engine.

As for your missing SPID label that shows the car's RPO codes you can get a "Build Sheet" for your Camaro if CompNine has the info for your VIN on file. Enter your Camaro's VIN on the CompNine webpage and if they have the info it will tell you so. You can get the 5 CompNine "Build Sheets" for $5 deal if you want.

The CompNine "Build Sheet" will look like this.

CompNine "Build Sheet" for 1991 Firebird Formula

Some of the guys here can get your CompNine "Build Sheet" for you if you ask nicely. @JT and a few other guys with access to CompNine have done it for others here before.

4L60, aka 700-R4, is a hydraulically controlled transmission. Has a governor, TV cable, etc. 4L60E is electronically controlled; has none of that mechanical stuff. Most of the actual powertrain type guts such as clutches and gears are the same though, just, the control system is different.

92 still used the non-E transmission. So, no, you wouldn't change its behavior with tuning. Sounds like your car had a TransGo shift kit installed in the transmission, set up with the "manual" option: NO factory transmission was like that, but it was a popular mod back in the day. The same kit is still available.

Yes, at the time, that was a somewhat competitive car. Far from the "top of the heap" even then, TPI having been obsolete for half a decade by 92, but still fairly decent. Today though, most minivans will put it to shame. Times have changed.

Since basically no other transmission will fit these cars other than that one, without significant changes to various things, that's probably what's still in it. You could theoretically "rebuild" it yourself - it's not all that hard - and put just such a shift kit in it.

TCI used to make the best converters you could buy, back in the 80s; but the original owner sold it in maybe 88 or so, and the new owners took it a different direction (less racing, more mass-market), and I wouldn't recommend their products today although they're not "bad". Just, not the best anymore, others can do better. Yank, Precision, Circle D, would be better choices.
