Transmission grinding. I think she's done for this time.
Hey all, I recently changed my transmission fluid because mine was black. Cleaned out the pan, changed filter. I'm not sure why my transmission is grinding, I think changing the fluid made an underlying issue come to light. Any tips?

my transmission fluid ... was black
Your transmission was already smoked. It's not impossible that it maybe somewhat worked (to whatever extent) before you changed it because the fluid was thick with gunk, and now it doesn't because the fluid is the right consistency; butt that's NOT the same as "changing the fluid ruined my transmission".

I think not.
Which no doubt was why you changed the fluid. As you should.

Not sure what this means, butt it can't be good. That's definitely Abby Someone behavior. I'd be more inclined to include it in the cause and/or effect of the black fluid.

It does get pretty humid here in the ky
Try Louisiana, Houston, Florida, for example. Regardless, that doesn't have anything to do with it. Is there anything I can do
What did you find in the pan?
can I only wait until it gives out?

Good luck. "Grinding" though, seems likely you won't have to wait long.

Good thing you don't live anywhere that it ACTUALLY gets REAL humid then.

Hard to say. Take care of it, is the best you can do.

Even if it was brand-new, that'd be the case.

Well, I can't say I didn't expect this. It is the original transmission with the car so I knew this would happen eventually. I might fo some searching in junkyards for a relatively "new" one, or possibly swap to a 5 speed manual.

Need more details on the "grinding" sound. How many miles on the tranny?. Grinding noise could be pump sucking air if neck of filter not fully seated or sealing ring out of position-drop pan again and check. Also you know fluid level is supposed to be checked with engine running ?

yes I am aware of how to check fluid level.
Although you might be right about the filter..... it was wiggling a little bit but I tried to push it up and it wouldn't budge. I pushed it as high as it would go. I did also change out the o-ring seals on the filter.

That is a decent amount of miles-stator support splines and some other parts will be showing wear.Is the "grinding"an irregular noise or a steady whizz or buzz?
