hello all. i have an issue with my reverse lights. I have a T5 manual trans. the wiring and the switch are fine. I've pulled the switch out of the transmission and depressed it by hand and the reverse lights illuminate. I'm wondering what is in the transmission that actually depresses the button on the switch ??? I bought the transmission out of another car. so I don't know if they worked in that car either. I was hoping to find an exploded view of the T5WC so I could see what actually makes it work. any help is appreciated. THanks !!!!
There's a big piece of linkage that works 5th & R. When in the R position it comes across the ball thing on the switch and depresses it. It's REAL BIG and real crude. Almost impossible for it not to work, except in one particular circumstance.
Sounds like maybe though, somebody tried to remove what looked to them like a "plug" or "bolt" from the outside, butt was actually the pivot that the shaft in question rides on; and knocked the clip off of it that holds the big link in question in place, which is now laying in the bottom of the transmission. If so, that'll require complete removal from the car and disassembly of the transmission to recover the clip, and then it's a piece o cake to put it back in, put the transmission back together, and reinstall it into the car.
The tremec rebuild manual is downloadable and has some images that may help with a view.
When you have a problem and post on a model specific forum, you are GREATLY helped by posting pictures and measurements of what YOU have. This may not work if it's your DD. But you never know when when someone else has the same trans./ parts and can point out a problem or difference.
Over the years, you have NO IDEA how many people have tried to take out that "bolt", and knocked the clip off, and then all manner of 5th / reverse stuff screwed up, and they're utterly perplexed, and REFUSE to believe what they've done. In your case it sounds like somebody did it for you before you ever even had a chance to get there.
I thought I had a pic of it on this site butt I don't. Oh well. The clip looks a little bit like a sorta REAL BIGG E-ring butt more complex than that. It slides onto that "bolt" like an E-ring might, butt there's more to it than that. You'll see.
When you take the transmission out and find it laying in the bottom of the transmission you'll understand instantly. Best o luck to ya. Posting more "I don't believe it" crap on the Interwebz won't put the clip back on.
Holy Shi'ite!!! I surfed my entire collection of stuuuupid pics, and GUESS WHAT I came up with.
So yeah, you can see the big crude link, and the little ball thing on the switch that the linkage hits, and the clip, and EVERYTHING. Happy hunting.
Good idea! I'll look for a service manual and check that!
Spoiler
T5 is working when manually activated, which is a good sign. Typically, a mechanical linkage or a lever inside the transmission pushes the switch when you engage reverse gear. You can check for a detent or actuator mechanism inside the T5 that engages the switch. For an exploded view, check the service manual or online forums for T5 transmission diagrams Completing a dissertation requires time, focus, and expert knowledge, which can be hard to manage alone.
