Tremec transmission

Hi Guy’s, I need some help please. Installing a tremec trans in an 86 iroc. Auto car going manual. I was planning on installing a t56 as were in the LT1 Camaros but since considering a tremec tkx . I had an LT1 flywheel balanced my 383 assembly. American power train wants me to go with a stock 621 bell housing.? Can’t I use an LT1 bell housing on a tremec tkx ? Thanks

Re: Tremec transmission

A TKX has an old school Muncie/t10 bolt pattern. The t56 uses a totally different design bell. So they're correct. American powertrain also makes a clutch release system for these cars and that transmission/bell combo. It will use a standard old school Muncie/t10 clutch and flywheel as well. I used the hydra kit for 82-92 cars from American powertrain w my t56. It was awesome. They make the same thing for the TKX.

okay , thank you that explains a lot. To further my question on my externally balanced 383 will I not be able to use my LT1 flywheel I had balanced with my assembly? I believe that is a 10.5 clutch instead of the 11 that American Power wants to sell me. Thanks

I don't believe that the lt1 style flywheel will work with the older style clutch and release systems. I used an 86 up flywheel w a ram concept 10.5 dual disc. The hydra release system worked perfect w it. The car drives like a normal car. Has normal pedal pressure, no chatter, shifts fast and no clutch slip.

Re: Tremec transmission

The actual stock LT1 flywheel, or replicas of it, are MUCH thicker than traditional ones. So no, they will not work with a traditional style clutch.

There's also the question of whether you have a 1-pc or 2-pc rear main seal block. The LT1 flywheel won't bolt to the old 2-pc style at all. So there's possibly that, too.

my externally balanced 383
If you haven't already built this, DON'T. I can think of very few worse mistakes that will lead to any more grief and confusion than this one. If you can GUARANTEE that it's at the STOCK 400 unbalance (24 - 25 in-oz directly opposite the rear crank throw), WITHOUT requiring any "special" "custom" work to any STOCK 400 parts to bolt up to it, then that's the ONLY way I'd do it. Building a motor with unknown unbalance, or that requires the bolt-on parts to be "customized" to it, is a one-way ticket to vibration hell.

Re: Tremec transmission

If you post a list of the parts you intend to use with a TKX, a second list of the parts you intend to use with a T56, and a list of the parts you have actually bothered to purchase, with pics, that would make your "what if I have the wrong parts and changed my mind on transmission?" thread(s!) more tolerable. You post multiple threads with different questions about the same topic, and you reach out to vendors who will tend to always sell what they profit from.

You have had your flywheel question(s) and others answered in the last 10 months. "What if I change my mind or don't like the price(s) so I change my mind again" isn't really a legit thread.

Want to get done? Save money. Make a list of everything you have and what you (think) you need. Don't buy anything that is a plain, stock, regular service part until you're ready to buy it all and get it installed. Parts bought at separate times tend to have a lack of clarity on what the right part is.

I enjoy the auto. hobby. But II have done so for so long, that I manage a list of what I need and order it all in the same week. If I was trying to understand what fits together over months and months, nothing would get done.

No hate intended. But you need to spell out your goal(s) for yourself, and figure out if you're ready to do it. Use your automatic until you get there.

thanks for your reply, I guess I don’t know how to add to my thread. So sorry. I do get different answers even from the guys selling the parts . Instead of trying to find out if my parts are compatible I’m just gonna bite the bullet and buy everything from American Powertrain. That should solve my problem and yours with my stupid posts ! Sorry if I offended anyone,

Re: Tremec transmission

The LT1 bell housing likely won't fit the Tremec TKX properly.
