305/T-5 Pilot Bushing/Bearing Recommendation
305/T-5 Pilot Bushing/Bearing Recommendation
Hello all,
I have a 86 Iroc Z with a 305.
Swapping the 700R to a T-5 WC out of a 92
I cannot get a correct bushing or bearing!!
Had a few fit on an extra output shaft, outside of the bore but when they go in, bushing ID too small. Thought that was normal so bought 19/32 reamer to just make it bigger a bit, too much wobble!
I need recommendations or part numbers. Can’t waste anymore money on this headache

Same bushing or bearing dimensions have been used in Chevy V8s since the 50s. Including for all 305s and all V8 T-5s.
What T-5 do you have?

All the bushings/bearings are the same id/od. If they fit on the input out of the block they fit in the block unless they have been damaged while installing. It's not like they go into the block and get compressed and the ID is now smaller. Is the mating surface on the shaft marred/damaged? Are you sure the trans is going in at the proper angle( lack of angle)and the bell housing is centered? Will a clutch alignment tool slide in?
Re: 305/T-5 Pilot Bushing/Bearing Recommendation
I use an extra output shaft from another T-5 as my alignment tool. It will not slide in when the bushing/bearing is installed
both the alignment tool (extra output shaft) and the actual transmission are smooth with no sharp edges or distortion.
The bore is also scratch free so that it can’t damage the part. I use a socket that fits the outside of the bushing to get it in and tap with a hammer
The latest part had ID- .0594 OD-1.094

Will it still not slide in w the clutch pressure plate/disk removed?

I was using bushings, to my understanding they should shrink.
A bearing should not shrink. But I cannot find a correct bearing

Re: 305/T-5 Pilot Bushing/Bearing Recommendation
Without measurements, I would suggest a bronze bushing (non-magnetic out of the box.)
If that's what you had in there, a light abrasive compound to the inside of the used one to open it .001" and brakleen to clean it off. I don't know if a brake cylinder hone is available that fits the inside of the bushing. Those usually work slowly enough, you can be "precise."
When you put it in, use keyboard duster upside down to freeze it.

I've put a bunch in and never had this issue. Maybe something g changed over the years. Now I use bearings.

I had this issue when I first manual swapped my car. They would fit before installing but would deform a bit after the install. I think I ended up using a bushing from National Bearing. PB-556-HD

Re: 305/T-5 Pilot Bushing/Bearing Recommendation
I've put in literally DOZENS of bushings of the years; probably at least 4 or 5 dozen, myself. Used to also buy them by the box of like 25 to supply to customers when I was building lots of 4-speeds for people. (wouldn't guarantee a transmission unless a new bushing was installed) I can specifically recall using them myself in 283, 327, 350, 400, 396, 402, 427, & 454. All the same ones. I've also used quite a few bearings too, though not as many; since they're the same size as the bushings, they're interchangeable. Pretty sure the same ones were used in lots of 6-cyls as well. Also pretty sure the same ones can be used in various LS motors.
Since no cars before around the intro of the 4th gen came with bearings, you won't find one listed for your car, which is why you can't find one. Some trucks and such may have, butt no passenger cars AFAIK. However the ones used in LT1 T-56 cars have the identical dimensions to the bushing. Here it is. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/ado-ct1078
There's only one bushing size and part # for all SBCs. Same for bearings. Blee dat. If you're putting them in and they don't fit, you're doing something wrong. Without seeing it I can't begin to guess, other than, if you keep doing the same wrong thing to the otherwise correct part, the same thing will keep happening to them. Or, your transmission clutch gear is damaged in some way, mushroomed on the end or something. Might not hurt to measure its diameter and check it over otherwise very carefully, since clearly you have no historical knowledge of that particular transmission, being as how you just bought it somewhere somehow and this is your first attempt to install it.
