T56 with 2.77 rear
T56 with 2.77 rear
Has anyone installed a T56 with 2.73 or 2.77 gears? I have a 2.77 9 bolt. Will I notice a big difference if I switch to a higher gear ratio? What would be the best gear ratio for a basically stock L98? Any input is appreciated.

With a T56 I'd have to go with a super steep rear gear ratio. Something like 4.11 or 4.56. You'll get killer accelleration out of the hole and with a .50 6th gear you'll get decent cruise RPM and gas mileage.
I can agree with that. Gear ratios are affected by engine power, tire size, and driving application. The tranny gears are important too. If you had a 4x4, you would have to match gears for front and back UNLESS you had different sized tires for front and back... Science is fun...

I have 4.10 gear available for 9 bolts if you are interested. All the info is on my page at www.koolmeister.com

2.73??? You'll HATE the T56 with that kind of rear gear! I thought my T5 was kinda doggy with the 3.23s and it had a 2.98 1st gear ratio. I've got 3.89's now...

I had a 96 T/A and the T-56 with 3.42's were too tall for me.

I find the T56 in my Hawk acceptable with 3.42's, but I would like 3.73s. Anything numerically lower than 3.42 is simply unacceptable IMO.
you will be fine for a while with a t56 and a 2.77 rear. thats what ive got, i bought a 10 bolt with 3.42s (in shipping now) but i think im going to do the tranny swap first. im guessing with cruise control and in 6th at 70mph i should be getting 35mpg+ before i swap rears. then eventually its on to 4.10s. the car might feel a bit sluggish in 1st compared to the auto, but the 1-2 ratio drop isnt near as drastic as the auto.

Unless you're building a land-speed car.... you'll have a theoretical top speed somewhere over 300 mph.
Three friends and I created a beastly race car from the remnants of a disgruntled race car driver's was-Camaro and some serious performance parts. It topped 280 MPH recently. Still, we did not have to use 6-speed... It's red white and blue and might be spotted by use in the Poconos of PA...
