A T56 for $50?

The shop that does our manual trannies and rearend at the shop has a T56 out of a 95Z. He said a guy had brought it in and had it looked at, well the thing needs rebuilt, he qupted the guy 1350 to rebuild it and the guy doesnt want to do it. The tranny guy will build it for me for 850 cash. I cant remember what parts are bad at the time, and exactly what he is going to replace. What I was wondering would it be better to go ahead and get the $50 tranny(he said thats what its worth)have it rebuilt, and try to find the other parts needed for the swap, bell, master/slave, throwout bearing, etc, etc or wait and get the whole setup from a junkyard? Thanks for any input. Also, is it possbile to get good used T56 parts to make the rebuild cheaper? thanks guys. lil jay

I say you go for it unless its totally messed up (comes in pieces in a box) ... even if you wait and find another T56 in supposedly good condition from a junkyard you will prolly have to get it rebuilt anyway. $50 is damn cheap and you can have it rebuilt with the stronger aftermarket components like you're talking about. Everyone hopes the Engine/Tranny they buy from the junkyard will just work with no probs but I think most of the time the stuff needs to be rebuilt. Just remember that its at the junkyard because someone totalled the car ... and most likely the engine/tranny (specially tranny) got messed up in the accident.

That is unless you stumble across the ultimate junkyard deal like I saw last month ... someone junked a perfectly good 90 IROC with the 350 because the fuel system broke. Talk about a 'Doh!!' Car wasnt even in an accident!!!

offer him $100 for his "$50 tranny"

You can then take it somewhere else for a rebuild when you need it for the 406

$850 for a rebuilt T56 is a good price considering the junkyards want $1200 for a used one (with all the stuff however) that may or may not be good.

Don't buy it if it has any broken gears, sure they can be replaced but other gears in the trans may not be visibly damaged, but weakened.
If you need parts look for an f-body specialty shop in your state. Every f-body that comes into my local junkyard already has the engine and trans removed because this shop buys them first.

check ebay

Check ebay. There is usually 5-10 for sale at any given time, and usually there are a few that come with everything, i.e. bell housing, slave/master cylinder, shifter, flywheel, etc. The only thing you'd have to buy if the custom crossmember ($100 from Spohn) and a few other things for the third gen swap. Some are new, some are used.
It will give you an idea as far as prices go.

I live in southern indiana, I don't know of any fbody junkyards around here, there is just no demand for those cars. None of the salvage yards have any T56's or any pieces, I am gonna call again tomorrow. What are some of the junk yards that you guys use? And what is a resonable price for everything in need to do the swap, tranny not included? Thanks again.

ok, i called a salvage yard here in town and they dont have a T56 car, but they do have a bunch of 5speed, i am assuming out of V6 cars. What I want to know is, are the hydraulics the same? the master cylinder, hard lines, and slave cylinder the same as on a 5speed? I am assuming the foot pedals are the same, and what about the shifter. He doesnt have the bellhousing for a T56 either but said he can try and locate what I need. I am gonna wait till i get my tax return back. he said for the pedals and hydraulics $150, then all i need is the bell and fork and shifter. :lala:

Pedals should be the same. hydrolic/master/slave cylinder are different. shifter is different.
Check the auto to T56 conversion tech arcticle, there's more info there on what works with what
