700R4...3rd sounds like neutral

This has happened twice now. Both times within 10 minutes of start-up. It'll go to shift to 3rd, but will sound like it slipped into neutral. I let off the gas and it clunked into 3rd. The fluid and filter have about 3000 miles since changed last. Once in 3rd there is no slippage, Doesn't happen every time, just twice in 2 months. I was told by the previous owner (someone I've known well for 10 years) that it was rebuilt 2 years ago.

Any ideas????

Does it happen on upshift or on down shift or on kickdown?
Does it happen in D4 only or in D3 too?

What´s your engine and year? Is this OEM tranny(number on case pass. side)

It happens from 2nd to 3rd upshift with the trans in the OD position. It is an '85 model year.

Does it ever happen in D3 position?

If never sounds me like you have a worn out forward sprag.
What happens if you are cruising in OD(4th already shifted) and you floor the pedal?
Have you ever taken the pressures of the tranny?
Look at the press when you floor the pedal and at the moment of going neutral.
Whats your engine? Do you have a 2-1 kickdown?

Have a nice day over there

I think i'm going to change the fluid and filter again. I was never changed after the rebuild until I did it. So I think there may be some junk floating around in there yet since it's not happening everytime, just twice in two months.

Hi Leo!
Nice to meet you here.
On my e-mail notification was written transfixleo answered on topic, I was wondering if this was you by any chance.
Checked out and see You was wondering If this was me by any chance.:lala:
As for the vette I´m not sure wich one we discussed
maybe the high HP vette: these guy never came back( they always spent a lot of money for a lot of things that should increase HP[sometimes the wrong things] but they don´t understand you can´t build a tranny for that beast w/o money)

maybe the vette wich skipped 2nd
I gave it a longer servo pin and that was the fix
(think the 2-4 band became somewhat thinner due to the first 1000mls)

BTW:2 month after fixing the 2nd skip the guy crashed the car to jankyard (hopfuly not caused by a too strong 2nd????)

Are you on AIM?
Have a really nice day in that wonderful America

It's nice to hear from you! We never went to Europe due to 9/11. I just didn't feel safe about it. We did however make immediate plans to go to NYC, sort of my way of giving the finger to Bin Laden. Uptown Manhatten is doing just fine but other areas, especially around Ground Zero are devistated. IF anyone is even thinking of going to NYC, please do so and drop into the shops and restaurants in lower Manhatten too.

My Wife and Daughter have AIM accounts but I never got around to it. I guess I spend too much time on these kind of boards and the professional ones too! My e-mail is in my profile.

I probably could of used your help on a couple of Mercedes five speeds recently. I know they are like 700's to you! Oh well, live and learn!
