What does everyone think of Transgo shift kits?
i was looking into getting one of these today and I want to know if anyone has used them and what results you had with them. Are they good? How easy is the install and how long does it take and is it worth it to buy one of these shift kits?
Thanks
Thanks
I liked mine...until my tranny died on me. The manual/automatic conversino was really fun...instant down shifts and you can hold to any RPM you want.
Figure a day or so depending on your skill. Set it up towards the softer shift. Mine kicked REAL hard until I took it back apart and removed the washers from underneath the accumulator spring...you'll see what I mean when you read the instructions. The video was very helpful also.

Would someone please let me in on exactly what the shift kit is? Does it make your car like a manual transmission minus the clutch? (I think the clutch is the best part of a manual..) or does it just adjust when your car shifts....?
A shift kit by itself allows the transmissin line pressure to be increased which allows for less slippage and a quicker more solid shift. The TransGo kit also allows for a manual/automatic or full automatic conversion. Pretty much it is like was stated above. Allows manual shifts (up or down) only taking the clutch out of play. These work best with a ratchet type shifter which will only allow you to index the gears one at a time. This will prevent on overzealous driver from skipping a gear or shifting too far and up into neutral causing the tach to peg and your motor to go bang. The full automatic conversion will require you to manually downshift the tranny every time you slow down. You will have to manually put it to first gear when you start out. The manual/automatic will work just like an automatic tranny while in drive or o-drive. If you stomp it, it will kick down on its own. However you can pull the shifter back and hold the gear until you want to shift up. The manual/auto will automatically shift down to a lower gear, but not up to a higher gear than selected. Much more streetable that way.

I got mine from Pro Built. He tailors the kit to your car and intended use. I ended up getting the performance kit, junior kit, Vette servo, and .500 relief valve. I'm still working on it (Dana sent me the junior kit after I got it apart and told him what it already had in it), also trying to figure out why my TCC hasn't been locking, so that is taking extra time. Mine also had a busted up accumulator spring, so he sent me a reworked piston and pin.
It is an involved kit. In fact, the instructions say something about it being for experienced, knowledgable transmission technicians only, not the do-it-yourself-er. But, if you've done involved mechanical work before, Dana can talk you through it. Getting the valve body back up was almost a 3-handed job, which can be interesting when you're doing it by yourself. The junior kit is less involved, but doesn't do as much for you.
If you're not comfortable drilling holes in multi-passage castings and cleaning precision parts to insure proper operation upon reassembly, you should probably leave the installation to someone you can trust. Your local Aamco probably isn't that someone.

I guess if I would have read the previous message, my question would've been answered :-)
I guess the question is, how much is it to HAVE it installed?

I don't know how much to have it installed. I did mine myself. The kit comes with a nifty video and instructions. I just took a little TV and a VCR out to the garage and started. Took a good part of the day, so I would imagine labor would be a lot. I had never done any tranny work prior to this and mine turned out just fine. Just remember to keep it all VERY CLEAN! But I do agree...not for the faint of heart!
I think mine was around ~$130
Can't remember, it was about 3 years ago.
