Need a STOUT tranny. Any Ideas?

I'm putting in a big block in my '86 Firebird thats going to be making around 570 ft/lbs of torque below 2500 RPM. I wanted to use my 700r4 (just get it redone with hardened internals) but numerous people have cringed at the suggestion. (saying it won't be strong enough). I LOVE the gear ratio's on that tranny though! Can I find a turbo 350 of 400 with those same gear ratio's and able to handle the power the motor will be dishing it? What about a 200R4? Are they similar to a 700R4 gear wise and stronger? THanks for the help.

there's a guy on here (Probuilt) who builds supposedly strong 700s. 200r4s are weak (so i've heard). If you don't mind losing the overdrive, switch to a th350, i thinkl the 400s are too big.

OR--- switch to a T56 and have fun shifting gears.

Well so far no one has suggested that my 700R4 (if built properly) won't work. SO I guess I'll go check out those web sites you gave me. I will also call up my local transmission guy, he is VERY good, and get some more info. from him too. Thanks again and if you have anything else to add, feel free to drop me a line!

you need to have a BUILT=$$$$$ 700r4 to handle a monster big block even it if will, go TH400, a junkyard TH400 with a shift kit is good for mid/low 10's

Aren't the TH400 considerable heavier and lose a lot more power getting to the ground than a 700R4(or even other transmissions)? What is the gear ratio of a TH400?

weight wise it is a little heavyer, might suck about 15 more HP but they are bullet proof, plus a 50$ junkyard trans with a 75$ **** kit and knowing its going to be good or a 1,500$ rebuilt on a 700r4 that ::might:: hold up

Don't go with Bowtie Overdrives. There are a lot of people on here that have had trouble with them.
