How common are the aluminum drive shafts(JG1) on 3rd gens?
How common are the aluminum drive shafts(JG1) on 3rd gens?
I have heard lots of different things, but now I am coming to the source. Here was a discussion on the LT1 board at camaroZ28.com http://web.camaross.com/bb/Forum1/HTML/096032.html I am trying to find one in a junk yard, but I haven't had much luck. Although I have only spent one day searching
, but it was all day. Are they in the salvage yards, should I give up hope? There are plenty of salvage yards around Houston too look at but I don't want to waste my time driving if they arn't there. And the employees are not willing to go out there and check for a JG1 code when I call.
GM wants around $300 for one new so I am trying to find a used one in a junk yard. I have found one here but he wanted around $200 for it(too much IMO).
So, what do yall think? I need to get rid of these vibrations at higher speeds.
BTW: Which model(s) is the JG1 code most likely to be on, or which model/year should I for? And is there some where I can look to find production numbers for certain options?
Thanks
Joe

Seems to be really common in later GTAs, like 89/90-92. The shaft on my car came off the line in a 91 GTA. I don't think camaros tended to get it except w/ 1LE.
Thanks guys, how much do you want for that shaft? I can find one in a junk yard for as low as $20 up to $50. Are the U-joints good?
Shoot me an email if you want too, I am interested.
Yea I have done some searching on here and the JG1 RPO seems to be on more firebirds. I HAVE HOPE!!

Stumbling on a 1LE shaft in the $20 to $50 range is possible, but quite frankly, it would be a minor miracle, one based on the fact that the yard man is completely clueless. My shafts are complete with U-joints and they're clean, polished, straight. They may, however, be more than you wish to spend. Please see the classifieds.

James I saw your stuff in the for sale section. Not bad, but I can get a new one for 45 more dollars(+ shipping though) and I can get a used LS1 aluminum shaft for 35 dollars less, if I look around enough.
Thanks anyway, I think I am going to rummage through the junk yards in Houston. The GTAs and Formulas were pretty popular cars around the Houston area back in the day. Got to be some lying around, and most junk yards sell drive shafts for like 15-25 dollars. I imagine even if they figure out it is aluminum they won't charge me more than $50. Plus I might have to get new U-joints, but that won't be a prob. EDIT: I also think it is fun rummaging through salvage yards
.
If I run into any problems finding one I will know who to email
, I think a polished drive shaft would look sweet, but I am on a budget. I need cheap as possible. But so far you seem like the person too deal deal with if I need one.
EDIT: Another thing, where can I find the production numbers on certain RPOs, I know some people on here know the production numbers of certain options, but I can't find where they are getting them from.
Shoot me an email, if you want to discuss it further. J_TZAK@neo.tamu.edu

I found one in the junk yard. Combined with the 89 IROC 145mph/5500rpm tach instrument cluster I paid $100.
I then found another at the Daytona Turkey Run Swap on Thanksgiving for $40.
Check the loaded 88-89 IROCs with t-tops. GM used them and the N64 spare to save weight cause fully loaded IROCs got HEAVY! But don't think about the rears, they are usually 2:77 dogs.

I think that RobP is steering you in the right direction. I had heard that they were common on 350s with t-tops, and when I checked my codes before buying my '88 it had both the Al driveshaft and the Al spare wheel. I don't know whether it is from the 350/t-top combo or the "heavily loaded" part since it has damn near every option I could imagine. And yeah it has the 2.77s. Sigh.

We had a few good junkyards in Virginia (Suffolk/Chesapeak/Norfolk) area that seem to have a good selection of 3rdgens. I saw at least 3 5.7 T-top cars that had JG1/n64 listed on the RPO list. Only one still had the shaft in. Most yards seem to pull the spare tires immediately to run on the yard cars, never found any of those.
