Do you have the distributor in your hand? Check out the distributor gear, there's a hole in the side. The hole goes from left-to-right, and inside, there's the roll pin. Knock it out with a hammer and punch, put the punch inside the hole. If I was home, I'd scan in the picture i had my friend take of me, as I did this exact procedure for "the future web page"... but if you look at the gear, you'll see it.
Somehow, mark the orientation of the distributor gear to the shaft. It wont' be hell if you accidently spin the gear 180 degrees when you put it back on, but two thigns can happen: (1) You won't be able to engage the matching gear (on the cam) in the exact position that you took the distributor out, and your timing will be off by a degree or two, and, (2), you might not engage the oil pan hex drive shaft. If either of these happens, when you're putting the distributor back in, spin the rotor a bit back and forth, the distributor should drop in.
Did the oil pump hex shaft come out along with the distributor? (It'd be stuck in the bottom of the gear.)
Hey, check it out... I do have a picture of the pin for ya. Look at this MSD distributor for a Buick, check out the distributor gear. You'll see the roll pin.

If you ever put a shift kit into an automatic transmission, you'll see tons of roll pins. Trending Topics

I took the pick-up coil out and forgot how to put the two metal washers back in around it . The round one with metal teeth on the inside of the circle and the square one with circle in the middle , where do these go guys ?
I know the go around the pick-up coil , but I forgot how . Supreme Member

You got two new clips with the pickup coil, eh? Well, one's a spare... just use the square one. It goes down on top of the pickup coil, and "forces" it downward. I can't remember if the clip is curved or not; I Think it is... put the clip over the top of the pickup coil so the curve of the clip is "down", forcing the pickup coil down. Then push the clip down over the top of the distributor so it snags the little ridge. I think I used pliers to push it down.

Now I can't get it to start . Well it will turn over , but just wont start . I could not get the rotor to line up where it should be . Can the timing be so off that it wont start ?
Should I just move the distributor until it starts ?

Yah, definately make sure everything's connected... 4-pin module-to-ecm connector, 2 pin module-to-coil connector, "internal" pick-up coil to module connector. Make sure the rotor's on.
Make sure the cap is seated all the way and not sideways on the distributor. Also make sure that if you removed any plug wires, they're all in the correct order, 1-2-3-4-5-6... with #1 being the frontmost PASSENGER side cylinder. Did you remove any vacuum lines to get at the distributor? Did you unclip the fuel injector feed harness to get more room?
If you want to play with timing a bit, rotate the distributor counter-clockwise, NOT clockwise. Counter-clockwise means that the spark will hit the #1 terminal BEFORE the #1 piston reaches TDC... which is exactly what spark advance is. Oh and don't turn the distributor while someone cranks the engine! https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...threadid=61277
If your timing was thrown that far off when you rebuilt the distributor, it might mean that your timing wasn't that accurate to begin with. Time to get/rent a timing gun!

OK ! I got it to crank up !!! . I ran it a sec , then turned it off , then cranked it back up again and let it run for a few min , it was a little rough , but not that rough ! then it died, then I cranked it up again and it ran fine again . I think the timing is still off some .BUT , atleast I got it running !!!!! Tommorrow I am going to buy a timing light and get it perfecto !
I knew that timing was off , to make it not start like that because everything was connected .Man !!! that timing must have been real off for it not to even want to run ; then it just cranks up and runs !!!
:lala: :lala: :lala:
:hail: to Tom ! Thanx for all your help today Tom !:hail:
Also thanx to bitchen ! :hail:
I've been wanting a timing gun , Now I have an excuse to go buy one !
