custom ram air
custom ram air
Oops cut myself off there
anyway this is not a question about ram air, belieive it or not, I'm here to tell you that this new guy actually built his own ram air! I spent about 20 bucks on it and 3 hours total. It rocks! I used 2 parts, I have no idea what they are actually used for, but they are called 6 inch takeoffs, and cost 6 bucks each at lowes', I'll put part #'s up later. I cut off about 1/2 or little more of each water shield under each air filter, bolted the takeoffs on, beat to good fitting shape with a hammer, and there ya go!
I also put in octane booster and F.I. system cleaner in the gas, and TransCool in the tranny, and between all of this stuff, I seriously feel a difference! It rocks.
ya know that piece where the 2 filters go together into one pipe (89MPFI)? is there something i can do to get more flow through there, or a newer better one that passes more air?

ps if anyone thinks i should write an article explaining this, or wants to pay me to build one for them for $40(minus your airbox and shipping) respond to this or email me @ camaro89dude@aol.com

I actually got to try the ram air out tonight. All at the same time i did that, added trans cool, octane boost, and fi cleaner, so i dont know if its just that or the combo, but it works great. Anyone who has not modified their intake in some way has to do this. I bought
6 Inch Universal takeoff
$5.86 x 2
Big *** thing of silicone sealant
$9.99
That's all i had to buy!
I hacksawed off the lower halves of the water shields and unbolted parts of them, but left on enough to keep out some water (if you drive through lots of huge *** puddles you might want to skip that part.
Then fit the rectangle ends of the takeoffs onto the airbox thing. Make sure you put them pointed toward the front of the car so you don't do the whole thing and go to put it in the car and it wont fit because you did it backwards (like I did).
Shoot some self tapping screws through the takeoff into the box. I used about 10 in each box to make sure it would stay.
Now these takeoffs dont match up perfectly to the boxes. Once you shoot the screws, get a hammer and beat the metal all around the box. ITs pretty soft and not too hard to shape. P.S. its galvanized and wont rust.] Then use the silicon sealant to fill in any un-aerodynamic spaces. I used all 10 bucks worth cuz i broke the trigger by accident and drilled a damn hole through the nozzle and all of it spurted out like and oil well.
Then stick it into your car. You might have some trouble fitting the air filters down in there and with closing the top piece onto it, but just play with it.
Now, about driving it. It only sucks in the cold air. Good. Theres two intake pipes. Good. They're real big. Good. And when you're going 45, put it in 2nd gear, drive up to 65 before you shift, and make it to 95 in 3rd (pretty quick too), I think thats good.
And theres another cool thing. SOmetimes, after my motor is heated nice, i can ride 30/35 mph in overdrive, and it makes this great rumble sound. Now, it makes that same sound only a little better, hard to describe, but i almost nutted my pants! Its a great mod, and as Karl would say, you feel it in the seat of your pants.

If only I had a camaro instead of a firebird...I'm starting to think camaro's are easier to install custom air setups in than firebirds are.
I'll come up with something though.
