Poor Fuel Economy: Time for a tuneup?
Hey guys,
I was talking to somebody about my car because they liked it, and I told them it was a V6 automatic. He said, well, on the plus side, you must get good gas mileage. I told him 180 to a tank max, he said something must be up. The car is a little sluggish when going up hills (A PLYMOUTH RELIANT KEPT UP WITH ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). I figured I'd put two and two together and I figured I must need a tuneup. How much gas mileage to a whole tank (15 gallons) do you 3.1er's (auto) get? My car is almost at 66,000 miles. It runs great, but it does tend to be on the slow side, yes I do know it is a V6 and these are 4000 pound cars. Do you guys think it is time for a tuneup? P.S. This whole plymouth reliant deely is Pis*ing me OFF!!!!

When was the last time you got your car a nice, fat tune up ?
after market spark plug wires, spark plug, dist. cap and rotor , etc ...
Click 'search' on the top right of your screen and do a search for TomP's 'major tuneup'
P.S. I get around 24 mpg.

Thanks a lot eric! My car gets 180 on driving through light traffic. Guess my car does need some major work. I dont really know the last time it got tuned up, probably never. I have had it for a year and a half just sittin around till I recently got my license, before hand it is bone stock. Only things changed were probably the things needed to be changed, as the previous owner was a female. Guess its time to break out the wallet for this one

Well at least it wasnt as bad as the first week I drove my 85, I got 100 miles on 11.7 gal I was running wwwwaaaaayyyyyyy rich, then after a new o2 sensor I got 203 on 9.1 gal, and last week I got a new egr valve and I went 250ish miles on 9.7 gallons. Right I've gone 100 miles in only a 1/4 tank so I still have 1/2 a tank to go until I gas up "I never go below 1/4 tank". So a tune up is really needed for your car.

Thanks 85sportcoupeto89RS. I guess I need those items as well. Dude, this is gonna be pretty expensive, but in the long run I guess it will keep other parts from straining and failing also. I am assuming that a bad 02 sensor will not make the check engine light go on. How much do they cost? Nice conversion by the way, u did a good job!

I got my egr for 30 bux. And my o2 was 12 bux. I estimate you'll spend around 250.00 for everything you need. New plugs and wires, egr, o2, distrubitor cap, check the timming, change oil and fuel filter"when I replaced mine it weighed almost 2 1/2 pounds
check your belts for any frays or needing to be tightned. Thanks I have almost 175 Hrs of restoring on the body, motor and int.But its worth it.

Could just need a fuel filter , could just need some new plugwires ...BUT , if it has not had a tune-up in awhile . I suggest doing TomP's good ole' tune-up !!! If money is tight , you can do things like :
1. go out at night , and see if you see and plugwires or your coil arcing out , (you'll see a blue glow )
2. change your fuel filter , its cheap , it might run a whole lot better just after that !
3.check your air filters , (are they paper and real dirty ? ) If so get some K&N's . If you already have K&N's get a re-charger kit and clean them !
4.take your distributor cap off and check it out , are the terminals real ate up , is there alot of carbon ?
BUT ; if you want to go ahead and do a full tune-up . That's what I suggest , if you have not had it in awhile , do TomP's tuneup . Do a search on here in the search and you'll find it !

okay sounds good, although the mechanic did check all that stuff during inspection, wouldn't hurt to check again tho
Plan on changing the timing chain soon, too.
Also rebuild your distributor, too.
Yeah, empty wallet, but, if you really like the car, one project at a time will help the budget

Yeah I am near Bucks County, I am from delaware county. Tastycakes are awesome, as for cheese steaks, I am up for them, minus the cheese. As for the car, what is required to change the timing chain?
It's an involved mission.
Remove pulleys at crank
Remove balancer
Remove timing cover water pump assembly, replace chain.
NOT SIMPLE
BUT
if your engine is a non smoker non oil burner, consider the effort for the solid gain.
IT's not just HP you bring back to car, but, smoother stronger power.
It's a very simple foundation item ya need to really consider.
Go to the yard & check any engine with the timing chain cover off it.
Feel that chian.
That's your chain. Loose & outta synch.
Also your distributor is worn down and could use a fresh rebuild too.
That's an easy job, do the search that topic.
I recommended someone to Northern Auto (800-831-0884) They said their prices went way higher!
Try others. OR call them and tell them to lower price or other vendor will get your busine$$.
You only need a new chain, not a fancy name,
timing chian set, timing chain gasket change kit, WATER PUMP (it's in your hands! change it).
It's a mission, but do this ONLY on good sealed block, not a leaker or old age block.
Really will make your engine feel great again!
