Big problem,no one has had a clue for 2 yrs,goin on 3

alright, heres the story,n its a biggen, i got an 88 2.8 v6,mpfi, 5 spd, anyways, ever since ive ahd the car, sometimes it wont start, ill crank away n she wont wanna start, had the engine rebuild, replaced damn near everything that could b wrong. i pulled a wrie when it was doing its crap n im pretty sure i wasnt getting any spark also. but im not sure.ok, so the way i get it to start, when she pulls her crap, which isnt that often, ill crank away till she starts, but when i do that,it has a large clicking sound n runs like hell till its warmed up,or instead of cranking away ill pull the engine control fuse and crank it,n the rpms willjump up to 3 or so,ill put it back in,start n shes fine and runnin alright. its weird *** ****?!?!?! Now when she dont wanna start and i can push start it and it starts, but sometimes itll ahve that clicking crap. its the weirdest **** ive ever seen, ive taken it everywhere, checked so much crap, i get a check engine soon light when im drivin sometimes, but its the vehicle speed sensor cuz i checked the code.oh,n ive replaced the alternator, battery, started, ignition components. so im so lost.

Damn dude, that was one hard message to read.

How do you start the car? Do you go right from "off" to "crank"? Next time, try this: Go from "off" to "on/test lights". The "on" position is the click right before crank- your dash lights come on, and you can also use the radio/power windows. You'll hear a "hummm" from the gas tank. This is the fuel pump "priming" the system, and bringing it up to pressure.

When you hear the hum stop, 2-3 seconds later, now turn the key all the way from "on" to "crank". Your engine should start right up.

If I jump the key from off to crank, my car will crank and crank and crank and never catch. If I go from off to on, wait 'til the hum of the pump stops, and then crank the engine, it starts with a 1/2 spin of the starter.

What fuse are you calling the "engine control fuse"?

Because you said that it solves the problem after pulling the fuse, which in turn resets your computer....I'd say the problem is in your actual ECM.

Disconnecting the battery does if you do it for a certain amount of time, and just like lots of other things, the time that everyone says varies. I've heard 10 seconds, 5 minutes, 10 minutes. I know that mine doesn't seem to reset unless I disconnect for at least 5 minutes. Don't ask me why that is though.

Anyways, I still think it's your ECM. When you pull the fuse, you're doing essentially the same thing as pulling the battery.

If pulling the ecm fuse allows the car to start I would also think it could be the ecm itself. an ecm from an autoparts store won't cost you more then a $100.

I would experiment with it alittle and if it continues to start after reseting the computer then I would definately swap the computer to see if that would solve the problem. Hey it is cheeper then replacing starters, batterys, alt, and various other things.

Did this problem start before or after the engine was rebuilt? Something simple to check are the grounds. On a V8 there are 2 studs at the back of the heads with several ground wires attached, along with the engine to chassis ground strap (don't know about the V6) Bad grounds can cause all kinds of weird problems

Just an FYI,
ECM
Computer
Same things in your car.
Looks great with those Keystone mags.
I think fuel, vacuum hoses, ignition modular, too.
Could even be coil.
Or totally worn out distributor.

well pulling the fuse may work better if you are not removing both the postive and the ground on the batt. It says right in the book that you must remove the ground wire also and its take like 5 mins to forget.

you said you heard some loud clicking once, my IAC valve [not sure if thats right] did that once and when removed it did have gunk on it where it could of not been sealing all the way. Not sure if the clicking is a self cleaning thing.

Could also just be taking a crank or two for your fuel pump to kick in. If mine sits for a while I either turn the key on and let it sit a sec or just crank it a few times to get the fuel pump going.

It should start pumping soon as the key is on; but I got that real lose colum thing which messes with the key switch.

Do a search, it's a very easy project.
Difficult to remove, etc, but very simple project to do.
Gain in tremondeous.
Could be your problem.
Rebuling cost next to nothing (literally!)
Parts is different.
Try maybe $80 tops & your own labor

i had a extremly rough idle before doing that project now its almost perfect

My shaft was stuck in the distributor, i was surprised the engine was able to turn that thing! I had to use WD-40 to break it loose that stuff is great!

Stuart,
I recall Fairfax, Arlington, Georgetown & DC having their fair share of BEAUTIFUL women.
Southern Women made me melt!
They all seem to appear especially after those hot steamy summer rain at rush hour, then, everyone out after 7 pm evenings for ice cream.

Want to know how to really attract women?
I did this in DC
I was a street vendor.
I sold $10 Sun Dresses during the day
In the Summer
Across from the Potomac Bell Telephone Building.
Those secretaries would flock to me like.....
And they way they "modeled" those dreses for me......
Ah... My 1977-1980 Summers in DC.........

hes a pimp, and hes gotta pimp somebody, so where are they?

karl, tell me about it, there are so many chicks around here, and most of them drive sports cars another plus. two for the price of one...

In fact, 90% of the F-bodies and Vettes I see are driven by chicks, and if you think about it like I Do, its a great thing....

sucks!
BUT.........

Start thinking.
When the idea arrives from your heart, you'll score big time......
Between that moment LOTS OF CRAZY FUN.............
Glad someone is getting inspired to go skinny dipping with the opposite sex.
I'll bet, Stuart, you'll do it by this Full Moon, too!
BE THE FIRST!!!!!!

Imagine a race

that's my kind of race!

see, i like your thinking!

I still want a high performance six, but all my money can't be poured into like i would love to do, cuase i have to pay for college to, i had planned on doing so much with graduation money, but reality hit me and that went into savings, but some will be spent too.

I have to agree with you in that, these are just cars, and that there is more in life, than races and such. I just have the car for a hobby, and boy do the chicks love it

Go visit American University for me.
That's where I went to college.
DC has great schools
You'll do well..........
So does Southern California (USC, UCLA even Santa Monica College-check out that last one, really!).

I don't know how anyone could study these days.
Attending/visiting the So Cal schools like I did (yeah 20 years after, I went back for courses-best thing I ever did, so great to see minds alive again instead of the the working world mentality), these women.... finest kind in Southern California.
Like I've said, the stuff legends are STILL made of.....

I remember someone asking me why I moved to California.
Honest, I think this answer was to my Father In Law before or during asking him for Daughter hand in marriage.

I told him honestly, "THE GIRLS!!!".
