Made a Cold air Intake!! WooT

I made a cold air intake for my 2.8 bird with the 3 inch pluming pipe. Its all black so it looks wicked.

I went to Canadian Tire to get a K&N air filter but they didn't have one with a opening for a 3in pipe so I got this other brand called APC (american products Company) Its a ***** brand I think, its got chrome on it n' ****. It was $40 canadian so like $30 USD.

When I took out my stock Intake I saw a Mass Air Flow Sensor, unhooked it and set it aside, snuggly.

Put a 90 degree bend to the rubber rinkly thing that goes to the TB I think thats what it's called. Then added a straight pipe to that and Super Glued it with a couple of LITTLE drops, holds very tight, can't pull it off. Then added a 45 degree bend pointed downwards and towards the nose a bit. Super Glued it, and drill a hole in it for the Air Temp sesor, screwed it in TIGHT.

Put the filter on. It has a rubber inlet for a 3in tube so i put a bit of super glue on it and pushed it in snug.

Alright! Yay! I'm done now, all good to go right?
NOT!
I was listening to music the 1hr - 2hr it took my to do this, my battery was dead, lol.
After charging it for a bit I started it, Vrrroooooom Vrooooom!

I can Hear the the filter hissing loud.

Go back into the car, CHECK ENGINE SOON light is on, I guess it's because I didnt hook the Mass Airflow Sensor back up, but I can't now so I just left it.

The car runs WAYYY beter and smoother now, The rpm's used to jump up and down when idling a bit, but now a have a real smooth ideal.

One problem, I think I am running rich now, I took out a plug it show my dad, it was black, he said it looks like your running rich.

I go out to my car, start it up, nice smooth idle, deeper exhaust note. I pull out off the garage, stop half way, and floor it, VREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. LOL! I can spin the TIRE now, and its an auto with 140k miles, 230,000 km and I couldnt before lol WOOT. Put on the brake to stop, real rough idle, white smoke from the pipes, it stops after i put it in park. Start today and take it for a drive, its not running rich anymore. No white smoke,

WAY more power! It doesnt Hesitate any more! It used to hesitate when i stepped on it.

Are them ***** APC filters any good? How much HP did i gain? I'm guessing 5-10. What do I with that Mass Air Flow Sensor plug in since I can't plug it in? If i restart the computer with it stop the check engine soon light from staying on? Will it hurt anything by not having the Mass Air Flow Sensor not plugged in? It runs fine and all.

Sorry for the long post and all the questions.
I'm going to buy some Film so I can scan some pics for you guys.

Thanks

Did not even bother to read the novel...
Black ABS tubing. I paid, 5 for "Y" peice, 7 for 2 90* parts and 7 for a 4'? length. I made a dual 3" intake. Still needs some work though. I may get those damn cone filters tomarrow.

Huh? Hope it was a restrictive air intake in your case. But if your hesitation and rough idle return soon , along with sooty plugs, I'd say you have some tps -fuel pressure issues. I say, because the same exact thing would happen to my younger brother's firebird.

Ok It is running rich becase of the the Mass air flow senser being upluged. Yes you can Run it for a while and I wont hurt it but you need to hoke It up and get it to flow air trough it. If you just can't plug it in you could legnthen the wires by placing more wires.

Thanks, I am going to fingure out a way to plug in the mass airflow sensor, probally put the stock piece back but i am not gonna put the big airbox back, I'll puty back everything from the TB to the 45 degree end.

It IS running rich, you can smell gas, it wasnt white smoke my mistake, it was normal exhaust, White smoke means gas in the oil = cracked head..

It runs like **** like its gonna stall cause its running rich, but only when its in gear and i'm stopped, idleing.

I will hook the stull back up tommorow, And i have pictures getting developed right now of my car, yay.

Same filter I used, but I had to keep the MAF sensor on, your car will run like sh*t if it's not hooked up. Gas mileage will go to hell. The computer's guessing the amt of air going into the engine, and it's not guessing correctly, so it's making it rich. Put the MAF back, ASAP.

The filter here is $24.99 + tax.

i'd like to see some pictures of it, if you get any. i did mine, and i love comparing. i know mine needs work, like a box, so i actually get cold air, and maybe some hosing leading down to under the car (even cooler air), but it's done me well. i didn't have to deal with that damn mass airflow sensor.... and just let the temp plug sit in my engine bay. i haven't noticed that it's running any richer, and the rough idle, that appears now and then, hasn't gone away (so it's impossible for it to be because of the intake). tune up time, once the car gets back from the paint and body shop!!!! anyway, here's mine.... accepting any comments...

Real deal, thats close to how mine looks, cept I made mine out of muffler pipe (kinda heavy) and put a euro ***** filter on the end. And like you said, I am wanting to put a box in the area to keep hot n cold seperate. Did you remove/cut that cheesie mounting bracket for the stock set up??

Yep, everything from the original intake is gone except for the bendy tubing that leads directly into the throttle body. My air filter isn't k&n either. no stores had any conicals with a 3 inch connector, so i said screw it. I held my breath as i walked into a store near me called "Velocity Concepts" (wonder what kinda people shop there, lol) and bought a Tenzo *shudders* Type R, air filter. it's all they had, and it seems to be doing it's job... still it was hard to fork over the cash for it, lol. I'm not so good with construction, so i'll be holding off on making any sort of cold intake box... what i have, is good for now.

Mike, congrats on the mod! And yes, you need the mass air flow sensor to be in the incoming air tube. The temp sensor isn't as big a deal, as long as it's near the filter, but the MAF must be in the air flow. Then you'll notice an even bigger improvement. If you're not in to that 45 degree elbow, it's glued to the MAF, and you could probably separate it by making a slit in the elbow right before the "ridge" of the MAF tube. The side of the MAF sensor "without" the 45 degree angle is the same as the side "with" the 45 degree angle attached, if that makes sense.

Luckily, my rebuilt MAF's glue separated where the 45 degree angle tube was attached. I just kept it in the basement. The Camaro MAF is the same unit, without the 45 degree angle.

Congrats on the mod! Let us know how it runs with the MAF back in the circuit.

real deal, hehe, I got my from autozone and cost me 21 bux, like you said, its not k&n, but the end is open unlike any other 3" cone I found. However my cai has less conections then yours. I just have the filter, muffler pipe, then the flexable stock part, then the tb. I cut the iat plug of the stock box, then welded it to the muffler pipe. works great. I am gonna try and build my box out of fiber glass, I love that $hit!!! I will try and figure out how to post pics on here, then once I get it all reasembled, I will post some pics

Ok here is what you do. Drill a 5/8 hole in your 45 and then the sensor will screw right in. Mind you drill it close enough so there is enough wire to plug everything in. Thats what I did. And it worked perfectly. No engine light .

Your talking about the air temp sender, not the mass air flow sensor, the mass air flow sensor doesnt screw in, its a computer chip.

put some finger nail polish remover in a cup. then just dip a Q-tip in it and brush the glued portion with it. Repeat as necessary unit you remove enough of the glue that the pieces will come apart.

I just put the MAF back on, now myne looks exactly like yours, except my filter is open at the top. It doesnt have a chrome piece over it, just a coneish dip in. The car runs allot beter now, and you cant smell gas, now i can lay 2 feet of rubber instead of one. lol. sweet.

and heres the intake with a K&N. The sensor is under the 45* bend. Screws right in and seals itself since the PVC is so soft.
