Son of a fu*%@! bi*&^! ...Fu*# ........

I was just spray painting that small metal area on the back hatch glass because it was rusty , a few days ago I sanded and primed it and today I decided to paint it . Well , I put tape around the glass and roof to keep the paint off . Well I was taking the top tape off when a big gust of wind came up and blew the tape onto the roof , Fu(* now I have three black lines of paint on my roof . I tried to get it out , but its still there , Im so pissed because its a white car and sticks out like a soar thumb , what can I do about this without bringing it to a paintshop !

Wayne,

that sucks man, what have you tried to remove it with so far. Be careful not to hurt your white paint. I would have a pro look at it, maybe he or she could give you some free advice on what to use.

Wait for it to dry, slightly sand it with 1000-1200 grit, then buff and wax the whole car

Wayne, I did the same thing, don't worry. Hopefully the paint doesn't have a great bond on your body paint. Get some rubbing compound, and that should soften up the black paint enough that you can wipe it of. When I repainted my trim, I got black on the roof too. But when I took off the tape, it also took off some of my paint along the inside of the window well But it the rubbing compound a try, if that doesn't work an auto detailer could probably get it off.

There was some over spray on my car once and the painter was able to use some diluted paint thinner. My main paint was very old and set up so it just wipe off the overspray. I would not recommend you do this, but a detail or paint shop may be able to do this.

I am going to see my painter tonight. I will ask him about what he recommends. Got to drop off the rest of the parts for painting. That and get the film I left. Hang in there.

Hey do you have any paint prep around (the wax and grease remover). It may remove the paint if it is not totally set up. Just a thought.

if it was spray paint you were using. just use some gas on a rag. all it will do to yours cars paint is remove the wax. but it will eat the spray paint right off. great cheap way to remove wax build up, wash your car in gas. just dont smoke.

I would try using about the same process as Dale said,

Wet sand with 1000-1200 grit sand paper, then buff w/buffer machine (rotary type,NOT orbital!) with medium/fine cut rubbing compound (3M brand at Walmart) then wash it off, wax it.

This will get the "overspray" off, but may take a layer of original white paint on there as well. No matter what you do, you may have a slight "blemish" in that area!!!!

P.S.>>>>> I would ask your local bodyshop or auto detailer first!!!!! If possible, ask a few different bodyshops for opinions,
this way, if they all say to do about the same thing, then you KNOW it should work!!!!!!!!<<<<<<<<

Good luck! Hope it works out OK!!!!!!

:hail:

Thanx guys for all the help .
Earlier today I used gas before I knew what it would do I just took a chance it took it all out except one streak , but its not that noticable . I tell ya , I was sweating it there for a min . My car does not have best paintjob , its the original paintjob , but it still looks good . Usually when I tell people I need a paintjob they say "it does ? " or "no it doesn't " So im trying to keep it halfway decent looking . Next time I will wait till the paint COMPLETELY dries before I go ripping the tape off !

I've been meaning to do this to my car as well. (Minus the paint on paint thing... glad to hear you got most of it off though) Did you do the ENTIRE black frame around the window or only the rusted spots? What kind of paint did you use? Glossy or flat? Thanks for the help!

Wayne, I thought something important happened!

Since I have now learned that gas takes off paint,
Wonder if I can stripped off the layers of paint on my Corvette that way!

Brake Fluid is a very good paint strip choice, also!
Carb Cleaner, too.

I asked the painter and he said laquer thinner. It should only work on the fresh paint if it can get under it. If the black paint bonded to your paint, he said rubbing compound will work.

I would've also agreed (well, I still do, haha) with Dale & Camaro_nut. But, I woudln't have used 1000 grit paper. I think using light pressure with 600, wet-sanding, and using a FLAT piece of wood as a sanding block would've worked great. 1000 would work too, but would take a while. But it would be the "safest" method for preserving your original paint.

Tip: Got tons of scratches under your door handle, from, I guess, fingernails? (how else do those scratches get there?!?) Wet-sand with 600 grit paper. The scratches disappear.

Glad to hear you got the paint off. The wind sucks sometimes, right? When I was doing my buddy's car's doors, there would be no wind as I sanded. No wind as I prepped the area. No wind as I masked the area. No wind as I shook the spray can up. As soon as I kneel down (tip, always bring your torso to the level of the spray can or spray gun) to spray, suddenly... HURRICANE STRENGTH WIND FOR 20 MINUTES!

It's been sitting in there since two weekends ago.
Split for short vaca & past weekend was too hot (over 100* outside during day).
Now I come home & play with Son.
Shortly it'll be wrapped up.
I plan on taking it to Bakersfield for the Hot Rod Reunion in Oct at Famosa Raceway.
Have to get tires on my Corvette (I drive it to work now), this weekend and I may have other business.
I can't wait for heat to break.
Just tighten things down (mounts), install brackets and accessories (alt, etc..).
Then hook up electric fuel pump.
FYI
If you look at your incar MPFI blocks,
You'll notice no fuel pump mounts. behind power steering pump is where they go.
Only the carb'd 2.8 blocks had them.
I'm using a 1995 low milage 3.4 block with 1985 2.8 carb stuff.
Thus the need for an electric fuel pump set up.
Shortly.
My Son comes first!
