Loose connector, where does it go?

Whilst in the middle of trying to fix my starting issue, I came across a connector (2 pin male) hanging down next to the smog pump. Anyway the wires don't seem to be long enough to really go anyway, they're probably like 5 or 6 inchs. The connector itself will reach to the bottom of the alternator, but that's about as far as it'll go. Could this be for something that I don't have, like cruise control? Or does the smog pump have an electrical connector somewhere? Thanks, Joe

On my s10, their was a 2 wire plug that went to it before It got removed . Thier is also a 2 wire plug that goes to the alternator, but highly doubt thats it. check your smog pump!!. GM is not like dodge, if your car didnt come with that option, its not wired for that option.

You know I saw the same damn wire when I put in my homemade cold air... I doubt it's harmful bro cause I ve been driving my 91 for a year now and I take care of it and it runs great regardless of that mystery wire. =)

Yeah, I can't think of anything that would be in that spot... let alone something with two pins. What harness does it come out of? The same harness that holds your TPS and IAC wires, running under the front of the motor? Or the harness along the passenger side's main frame rail? The high pressure switch on the A/C hard line (passenger side main frame rail) is a two pin connector, but it's female.. aside from the alternator, I can't think of anything in that area with two pins-- even on a V8!

Tom, the AC high pressure switch is connected, so it's not that. I can't find any connector on the somg pump either. The wires come out of a loom that is hanging next to the timing chain cover. It looks like the loom then goes under the from of the engine, although I can't tell for sure that it's all the same one. The water temp sensor isn't in the block is it? I'm just reaching for straws as to what this might be. Thanks for the help guys.

I bet it's for the mat sensor, on the front of the air filter housing.

You have to take the air filter out the get at it, or you might break it like i did.

Thats the only two pin male connector on my '87 in that area.

Are you talking about the MAF sensor?

There's one there....and I'm positive that the loose connector is for it.

Do you know what side of the smog pump it's on? I'd checked over the whole thing and didn't find anything, so it'd be nice to know where to look. Also, any idea as to what it controls? Thanks, Joe

Hmmm, I just happened to have an old AIR injection control solenoid..... sitting in my living room, of all places.

The connector goes to the solenoid that is bolted to the back of the smog/air pump. There is also a vacuum line going to the solenoid.

The connector is on the end of the solenoid facing the motor. If I remember correctly, the only way to easily see the connector is by pulling the air pump off.

The solenoid controls air flow. When switched on, it directs flow into the exhaust stream. When off, fresh air is blocked from entering the exhaust.
