Welcome to the board.
Trust me on this board, the TTA is old news. We all know we can get 250 hp V-6. But with only 1555 produced have fun.

Whew, thanks for the tip. I had no idea that this 13 year old car existed. I'll be sure to pick one up next weekend.

Oh yeah, like all of us have $20,000 + to buy a TTA, at least that's what the guy in Ventura was selling his for. Heh, when I win the lotto, I'll see if I can find that guy w/ 92, YES 92 miles on the odometer and buy it from him. That'll be a sweet ride.

LT1 , are u pulling our leg? hehe, hey all i thinkwe should all be nice to this guy, if we're mean he just might never come back to the board. It is the truth, easiest way to get a turboed firebird was to simply by the ones the factory made, prob is it costs lots of dough that we really don't have. Oh, and the reason the TTA's got that only 250 hp and run 13's is simply because the vette of that year (1989) only had 255 hp, and no passenger production vehicle can have more power than the same year's corvette (GM rule) which limited them to a maximum of 254 hp, but, 250 is more believeable, and yes, they've been dynoed getting more than 300hp at the fly....easy.

It has been my understanding that the '89 TTA was the fastest production car of that year, with more HP at the wheels than the Corvette... however, the way it was told to me was Chevy whined to big daddy GM and consequently got Pontiac to play down the TTA's power output.

well, the production corvettes are required to have the most available horsepower over any 4 passenger car. In other wrods, if the two back seats that are unusable in our cars were ditched, then we could have some ponies. Ummmmm, oh, and the TTA was the fastest 3rd gen ever, and is also the fastest T/A ever (not sure on specs for the new ones though) but they're near equal.

wow, that sucks for his first post, not so smart.

anyways, i think a brand new LS1 with it's 320+hp
or a firehawk with even more would be ranked as the fastest T/A's EVER. But as far as 3rd gens, the TTA is the winner by far, great car for 13 years old and a v6!

i think those last 320hp T/As ran somewhere around 13.7's in the 1/4 in stock form....nowhere near slow, and at teh same time a TTA is clocked at about 13.5's in slowest form....that's what they tested apparently, most on the street would turn 13.0-13.4. and firehawks aren't officially pontiac, that'd be SLP.

all I meant is that if you are looking to make a turbo you should look at how gm already did it. And I know they didn’t make many of them but they did make more Grand National so if you took one of there motors and hooked it up.

if you want to see my firebird

Its been done. Flying89GTA actually took a TTA engine and put it in his GTA. But there are others that have the GN engine in their cars. There are a couple on this board, and even more on turbobuick.com

Ouch, jumped on for your first post! We're usually much more friendly; the "turbo" issue is a touchy subject around here. Welcome to the board! I love that Dodge of yours; how does that thing drive with the skinny tires on it? Seems like the 440 would turn them into tire smoke instantly!

it drives good but i don't use it for hot roding around. i use it more for car shows and stuff it only has 68k Miles on it and I want to keep it original. and the 440 is just the model it has a 318 in it.

During speed week at Indy, back in 1989. The TTA was clocked at 171.26 mph in the straights, with a 158.30 mph lap speed. LS1 are limited to about 162. As far as 0-60 for quickness,
I even think LS1 guys would say the TTA. 380 ft.lbs of torque at the wheels is quite a few more that the mighty LS1 is putting out and I haven't seen a road test yet for a LS1 F-body with a 0-60 in under 4.6 sec. Although everything is debateable.

I thought it had 340ft/lb of torque, or was that underrated too?

I'm in no way bias of a ls1 over a TTA, I don't own either. But I'd say some stats go for one and some for the other, no I don't think an ls1 has been under 4.6, but not all TTA's were 13.5 stock.

A quote from 2000 (dunno if '01,`02 are any better) motor trend:

On the dragstrip, our Trans Am ripped 0-60 mph in 5.0 seconds and cleaned up the quarter mile in 13.5 seconds at 107.4 mph. .. For purists, these acceleration stats also beat virtually every Pontiac musclecar, including the legendary '69 GTO Judge with its 370-gross-horsepower 400-cubic-inch V-8. And in handling and braking, it wouldn't even be a contest. (guess they aren't counting TTA as a musclecar)

I think the two are great for what they are, two different cars, from two different times with debatable equality or greatness, depending on what aspect of speed you are measuring.

At the time I dynoed mine It had a chip, no cat, & a K&N. Untuned it made 435 ft. lbs. torque at the wheels.

Have a copy of a fax sent to another TTA owner from PAS Inc.
(assembled the TTA's for Pontiac) they stated 280/380 at the wheels.

To answer ? a little.

I'd say with a good driver a bone stock LS1 would beat a bone stock TTA(YES BONE STOCK TTA DOWN TO THE FACTOR BOOST SETTINGS! :sillylol: )

TTA's were rated at 255hp for the reasons stated above...poor Chevy whinned and bitched...

I can't wait to get mine tuned better, tracking down a few little bugs, but once its where i want it to be look out, its time to go vette hunting

i've even seen people with dyno sheets that had 300-301 RWHP, yeah they weren't underrated from the factory
