Got it on the road, needs some tweeking

Ok, I got insurance and plates on it today. The Mrs and I took it out tonight and have noticed a few things....

1.It needs shocks and bushings way worse then I thought.

2. Moving, it cools way to much, only goes to the 1/4 mark, say 150-160, with a 185 stat in it. At lights, it heats WAY up, like 230 or so?? how do I test the fan to make sure its comming on??

3. Crappy mpg, we drove say 30-40 miles, used 1/4 tank of gas? And didnt' have as much power as I thought it would.

4. Still idles high even after being drove a bit, which did help it calm down, but still idles say 1200 when at operating temp. What do I need to do/get to get that down some??

5. Still idles tad ruff. I relized I have not re-set the brain after doing some of the elec parts swapping, etc. I am gonna wait tell after I fix the IAC correct, and get a new O2 sensor. Any other parts to swap?

6. I am running basic acdelco plugs rst??x at .045 gap. thats what hood says, is that about correct?? OR should I get better plug, with that gapping??

7. Oil pressure guage seemed to calm down a bit and not be as irratic. Thats good thing

Let me know some thoughts. I am still learning this car a bit. I made a list off all the stuff I have replaced, and the prices, HOLY CRAP, alot more parts then I thought, and alot more $$ then I thought.

BTW, where do you get the accell fuel injectors?? And how much is a set, vs getting v8 injectors and having them cleaned??

Find a spare injector set & have them cleaned.
The Accels are expensive but can be considered worth it, IF you seek that "item".
Vacuum leaks are the number one problem during shakedown rides.
Affects milage, too.
Do you have air direction shields in front of radiator & the air dam under the car still intact?
Is it a good clean radiator?
Fan is easy to test. "Hotwire" it to battery for testing purpose.
Then just start car & watch it till the fan kicks on at a certain temp.
Easy tests.
Fan is about $30 to replace, switches are a different matter

I will see if I can find some v8 injectors. I'm guessing after 165k+ miles, they kinda need somethign done with them.

I did do some vacume hose repairs, but have not inspected all. Guess I need to throw the vac guage on it.

All shilds, scops, etc are fine, like I said, cools TO much while driving, and not enough sitting still.

How do I check the relays to the fan??

Couple ways.
Start car.
You have AC?
Your fan should run when the AC activated
Next is just as easy. Sit there & watch the car WITH ENGINE RUNNING! until the fan turns on.
IF those things don't happen, start searching for the why.
I doubt it's the relay.
Usually is something else.

Ok, I went to parts yard, only found the TB part I was needing, no mirror and no V8 injectors

Did find a pass side T-top for resale, and that dual snorkle air intake on the v8, with maf and iat for resale.

I wont be able to mess with fan tell next weekend. I do have ac, but it is out of freon, so I could turn it on for a few sec to see if fan works.

I did install a "T" on the vacume lines, but my damn guage broke, so I gotta get new one of them. I might have had vac leak at TB, them lines were so sloopy where it meets TB, fixed that while I fixed plate for IAC. I installed new bosch O2 sensor. Dx brain for about 5 min, then took for drive. Seemed to do better on Idle and power. Didnt drive enough for mpg check.

Drive car short distance, stop, open hood, await the fan to cycle on AND off.
Takes about the time to drink a can of soda.
That'll answer your fan on & off question.
BUT
IF your alternator is weak, expect cooling problems, also.
Discovered that.
Was surprised, then deduced why.
That fan kicks & sucks lots of juice.
You need the 105 AMP alternator.
AC as accessory/option tells ya that fact

Isn't it 16 pounds for the v6 and 18 pounds for the 305's injectors? Would the extra 2 pounds cause that much of a problem? (Just curious!) 3.1 v6 injectors are the same flow as 2.8 injectors, right?

I thought I read a post where someone put v8 injectors in their v6, and made it run better. And I thought v6's had 17lb, and v8 had 19lbs??

I know on my dodge, the v6 and v8 have the same exact injectors, and we put ford mustang 4.6l 19lb injectors in them due to the doam 4 nozzle design rather then the oem 1 nozzle flats.

I drove it sunday quite a bit, doing much better, alot better on mpg, for me anyway. I still think I am gonna try some kinda injector swap. Mrs found post stating that the v6 camaro had week injectors and flipped. So accorind to her, they HAVE to be swapped. I dont mind a bit another mod, and I get to tinker

Yep, here's what he sent me, in October 2000. Damn, that was a long time ago!

Tom,
Thanks for letting me know they made it ok.

Your injectors were not as bad as some I have seen but it definitely helped to clean them. Before
cleaning, there was a 7% flow differential from the lowest to the highest. After cleaning, the
differential was down to 2%.

The flow rate on the injectors is rated at 18lb/hr at 43.5psi. This is what I test the injector at. The
actual flow rate varies depending upon the actual fuel rail pressure.

Let me know if you have more questions.

Rich J.
So I guess we're at 18 pounds...? Hm. Coulda sworn I read that we were at 16.

Great, thanks alot. So I bet 19lbrs wouldnt be to much then. Or think I should find some 17's??

***, your so full of info, I wish while working on my car I had a direct fiber optic wire going to your brain.

DO NOT GO UNDER the required fuel pressure rating.
Find the right solution.

1991teal, nobodys perfect, and tomp is the :hail: of these cars, I figured he could dig up the info. I am also looking that his injectors are for a 2.8l, where mine is slightly bigger 3.1l so I think I will try the 19lb injectors I bought for another project, and throw them in it some weekend. Thanks for the info The Mrs seems to be enjoying the car quite a bit. I think I made a good choice, and I almost have a full tech deparpment online

I'd actually say that TomP is a guy who spends way too much time with f-body information, and should concentrate more on other things.

But I coulda -sworn- that our injectors weren't what Rich said they're rated at.. I thought they were 15-16 pounds. although I wonder if the injectors I sent him were v6 injectors? They were from TheWraith (on thirdgen.org's) blown '87 2.8 engine. Maybe he swapped injectors out?

Dale, let us know how those injectors work out for ya!
