What do your engines sound like?

People always assume I have a V8 ever since I got a high flow cat and exhaust. My 2.8l doesn't sound like the ones in fieros, luminas, celebrities, s10s, or cavaliers. I was just wondering what your engines sound similar too? Sound clips? My engine sounds very similar to the inline 2.8 found in 80s BMWs.

i dont have a sound clip but i will explain how mine sounds. i have stock exhaust manifolds, a 2 1/2" y pipe, no cat, 2 1/2" intermediet pipe, daytona turbo muff 2 on the left exit. and 2 2 1/4" tail pipes. it sounds good. normal but loud when cold. nice after its warmed up (lopey from cam). its loud but annoying at mid rpm 1800-2500. rev it past 3000 and it crakles and pops. i like to shift it down to first and accelerate hard up until about 5000 then let off. damn that sounds good.:hail:

Thats what mine sounds like at those rpms too. Most of the time the exhaust sound is annoying between 1600 and 2500 rpm, but after that it sounds nice. Getting up to 5000 rpm in an auto is impressive. I have gotten close at around 4800 rpm.

usally when im racing i will put it in first and stall it to about 1500 then floor it and take it to 5000rpm then shift to 2nd. ive read on here of some guys reving there 2.8's to 6000 and above. i dont take mine past 5000 because it just seems like its too hard on the motor.

I have the dynomax cat back, and it sounds fairly deep, not v8 deep, but I would say 4.3l deep. I dont think I have had mine over 3500-4000 rpms. Their are a few ranges in it that do tend to be a bit loud and vibratie, but not bad.

I could probably get my engine to rev above 5000 rpm, but since I have 103k on the original motor, I am not going to risk blowing it to pieces. I don't think there is enough bhp to blow it up either .

Mine Will pull to 5400 in first and second if I nail it.( 700R4 full race trans from Darryl Young) I don't take it above 4000 too often though. Normal shifts range from 3500 to 4200 in everyday normal pedal range. I had Jimmy put a V8 governer in it as well and it will still pull those r's. 3.23 rearend.

If I floor my auto, and leave it in drive or 2nd, it will shift at 5300rpm.

Oh, and my sounds very deep... and actually pretty loud at idle... it's a no-name muffler... but I will swear by it for the 6's as long as I live... it sounds amazing... I've heard the Dynomax and this is very similar... I like mine better though... and if I ever get the headers on it and the new y-pipe it'll sound even better... but it looks like I'm buying an 84 Z28 this weekend with a 350 in it... so my engine and trans and headers will probably be sold before it see's it's true potential...

the muffler is a V-Force muffler BTW... and my engine idles a bit lopey so I think that kinda helps the tone out...

For anyone seeking to go past atleast 4,000 RPMs
and you have about say 75K to 100,000 original miles.....
I'd strongly suggest a new timing chain.
BHP doen't matter how much is being pushed, when a valve hits the top of the cylinder at fast RPM's.

Ya can get to about 4500 RPM before ya run outta steam.

Increase your spark & exhaust flow to reach a meaningful 5,000 RPM

i dont have a problem with mine running out of steam before 5000. i think my cam helps me mostly there. my motors only got around 25,000 on a fresh rebuild. i put my motor on desk top dyno and got 174 hp @ 5500rpm. and 191 ft lb tq at 4000rpm. i dont know how acurate desk top dyno is.

DD2000 is pretty accurate. As long s you give it the proper numbers.

I got my cat back from JC Whitney. At the time my muffler had a gaping hole in it and I needed it replaced quickly, but I thought it would be a good idea to just replace the whole thing including the cat. It sounds alright and flows a bit better than stock. I didn't have much money when I bought it. Sometimes when it is hot outside, my engine sounds like it is accelerating 10mph faster than the speed limit I am traveling at.

The funny thing is everybody things we have at least a 305 under the hood, they don't believe you when you tell them it's a 6.

Mine is just a stock muffler with pipes that are bent like the day it came off the show room floor. *** I love that sound between 2000 and 3000. won't give it up for the world.

Who can tell me a great muffler shop in the San Fernando Valley?
Or even in East Los Angeles?
Atleast there they have great breakfast burritos.
I tried one at Zelzah & Nordoff.
Only a Union 76 station & CSUN there.

Oh yea 6000+ shifts sound real nice. Most poeple will ignor you as you pass buy but do a 3500+ shift and they start looking.

With ram air, once into second the car pulls more and more in the upper rpm range. Like riding a dirt bike you gotta feel it. I swear on a cold nite in a head wind, I swear it feels like i got turbo or something. It just pulls harder and harder up to red line and above.

Only nice thing about a 2.8, it revs n revs n revs. like a bike.
